Pisa, in my opinion, only has two things: the tower and the airport. The Leaning Tower is worth a visit, but it's best to combine the visit with your arrival or departure date from Italy. Or, if you rent a car, you can visit the nearby towns and return to Pisa for the night. But don't waste more than one day in Pisa.
Valentina was a great host. She welcomed us and showed everything we know. She offered pushbikes for us to use which was a nice surprise. At our check out, she gave us lift to bus stop which was so helpful cz its about 15mins walk and our bags was heavy and was too hot to walk. She may needed to go in town anyway but she waited for us which was kind. Definitely recommend this place to stay if you want to be a little out of town.
Pisa is a city of two halves. South of the river Arno to the station is more real with some great bars and restaurants. North of the river, and towards that tower becomes a bit more touristy. We visited before the university came back and so it was possibly a bit quieter. The museum at the Arsenal was fascinating and that tower was more interesting than I expected. It's a very walkable city, but the top of the walls don't really offer the great sights one might expect.
Attractions were great but the city itself is dirty and too many pedlars and beggars. Police were there in numbers but not acting to stop tourists being hasled. Also be careful with buses as we bought paper tickets at the station and they were flimsy and dont buy returns as they only last 70 minutes. We could not validate our tickets and were fined on the way back. A lot of Italians in the city were very discourteous especially getting on and off buses
Nice place for 1-2 days stay! Plenty of eateries around the corner from the leaning tower . From the train station , nice views across the river. However without local guidance , difficult to move around the city, could do with a tourist information centre at the train station !
Pisa was a real surprise. We'd visited the piazza dei miracoli a couple of times before, on day trips , but never explored the rest of the town, which was delightful! Away from the souvenir shops and crowds of the leaning tower, it was atmospheric, interesting, and rewarding to explore. Plenty of nice cafes and restaurants. You get a great view of the leaning tower et al from the walk on the city walls - with no other tourists about! (We walked the whole way round the walls, which we wouldn't necessarily recommend as you go past much less picturesque parts of the town, but you can get down at various points on the wall.). Botanic gardens a lovely, quiet oasis too.
