Great monastery experience! The place was peaceful and comfortable, the staff was excellent, and the onsen was fantastic. The entire experience was perfect. They offered a meditation class and a special ritual, both of which were truly beautiful experiences. The food was memorable

I had always wanted to stay in one of the temples in Koyasan, and I think I chose the right one. It was an amazing experience living amongst the monks, engaging in the morning ceremonies, and enjoying the breakfasts and dinners. I would gladly return on my next visit.

Staf was very very kind, smiling and welcoming. It was all very clean. We took of our shoes and they had shoes for the inside and also separate shoes for the toilet, so it was all very clean. Good location, around the middle of the main street. Dinner and breakfest (vegetarian) were included and it was an amazing experience and also very good. Dinner was inside our room and breakfest was after the morning ceremony and was also not too bad but just a bit small. It was across the street from danjo garan and it was amazing in day and night. Sleeping on the mats was actually not too bad at all. The ceremony was very special.

The temple is situated a short walk from the main street of Koyasan, and is situated in peaceful, forested grounds. The monks who greeted us were very welcoming, and spoke a good level of English. The rooms are located in a building across from the main temple, but within the grounds. The rooms, while basic, were pleasingly traditional in layout and what we expected of staying in a temple. In fact, the room was bigger than some hotel rooms we stayed in elsewhere in Japan, and there was ample storage for our belongings. A pleasant surprise, considering the lack of storage in most Japanese hotel rooms. Our room (Japanese style triple room with private toilet) was also equipped with a private toilet. It is unclear on the booking.com site which temple lodgings in Koyasan have private toilets, as the room listing may say Private Toilet, but the amenities listing contradicts this, stating shared bathrooms. For medical reasons we needed a private toilet, so I emailed the temple directly to confirm this, which they did. (note: I emailed in Japanese (Google translate) and they replied in Japanese.) Their website also specifies they have two classes of rooms, and that only one class has been upgraded to western style toilets. Not sure how they differentiate between the two classes. Our booking included dinner and breakfast. Both meals were exquisitely presented and served in a communal hall for all guests. Guests sat on cushions on tatami mat flooring. The food was all vegan, both for dinner and breakfast. I'm unsure what some of the items were, but it was all delicious. Observing the morning prayers at 6:30 is expected of all guests, and we felt very privileged to be involved. One of the monks instructed us on the stages we were allowed to participate in, and it was a very spiritual experience. All in all, it was definitely one of the highlights of our 3 1/2 week honeymoon around Japan.

wonderful atmosphere in this spiritual village. Our room was exceptionally large, comfortable and both modern and traditional. It included a small zen garden and a beautiful hot bath. The top level Buddhist food was both plentiful and delicious. Wifi was good. Rooms were very clean. Keep in mind this is a traditional Japanese hotel and you have to remove shoes everywhere you go. The meditation session was short, but informative. The night tour was also interesting. The morning prayers were also moving.

This was a beautiful experience. The temple is gorgeous. The rooms were very clean. Everything I needed was there. Joining in the meditation and listening to the morning chanting was restful. It was in a great spot, close to the road but calm and peaceful inside. It was a short walk to Koyasan village and many of the attractions.

This place was hard to get to from Osaka but so worth it! The village is spectacular and this property offers dinner and breakfast so you can enjoy the surroundings and not worry about food. It is more traditional than other places you'd stay at, you get to experience sleeping on the floor and the food they serve is vegan.

Excellent authentic and comfy stay in Eko-in Temple at Koyasan village! Food was an amazing experience on our first days in Japan! We also attended to morning ceremonies which were interesting (we also got some pre-information about the Buddhist ways with a Okunoin night tour).

Authentic temple stay experience. Awesome temple - like a large Japanese villa. Simple rooms which were well worn but comfy beds. You're here for the experience though - food, onsen and morning prayer ceremony all fantastic opportunities to try something new for Westerners. We were a family with teens and all loved it!
