Ski Resort of Royal Splendour
Set against the spectacular backdrop of the Alps, Innsbruck is not only a world-class European ski resort, it’s also the former seat of Maximilian I’s Holy Roman Empire.
This imperial legacy has left its mark, most notably in the Old Town where beautiful Rococo buildings sit alongside pastel facades and typically Tyrolean, flower-adorned windows. The visitable Hofburg imperial court owes its modern appearance to 18th-century Empress Maria Theresia.
The Hofkirche contains a memorial tomb for Maximilian I, and his life is depicted in frescoes on the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof) nearby, named after the gleaming, copper tiles lining its entrance.
Flying into Innsbruck Airport, it’s easy to see why the city was so highly regarded. Practically every street ends with a view of the Alps, lush in summer, snowy white in winter. Nestled on a slope is Schloss Ambras, ex-residence of Archduke Ferdinand II, while the surroundings provide summer mountaineering, hiking and golf.
In winter of course it’s all about the fantastic Innsbruck skiing and snowboarding. Ski areas include Nordkette mountain, accessed by cable car and chairlifts near the town’s hotels and B&Bs on Booking.com. Its varied pistes means that several international competitions are held here, as well as the Bergiselschanze ski jump contest. The après-ski is laidback and centred around chalet-style bars and traditional restaurants.

I bought the Innsbruck card as I wanted to do as much as possible and it was well worth the money, several options available and getting it online and onto my phone was very quick and easy. I loved the beauty of Innsbruck and the friendly, kind locals. There was a wine festival and the atmosphere was wonderful with local musicians dressed in Tyrolean outfits and playing delightful music. The shops were great with many beautiful, well-made things to buy. It was delightful to walk into the old town by the river and the water was a gorgeous teal colour. Unexpected great discovery.
Unexpected great discovery. Visited in August and had an amazing experience, walking around the city and exploring nature around. Came by car from Luxembourg, roads were great, and not extremely busy. There are many hiking and biking trails with different degrees of difficulty just around the city, if traveling with small children, elder people or just don’t feel like walking up to the mountains, take the Nordkettenbahnen cable car from the city centre (c. 50 euros to the top), totally worth it. For some cultural activity, I recommend trying the Ambras castle. Just walking around the city and interacting with people was a great experience.Guest review byInmaSpain - 10

The cable car to the Top of the Mountain was an excellent value and I'm SO glad we did this. The view is spectacular! We were skeptical about the weather but we were above the clouds at the Top and it was fantastic. The city is beautiful and a delight to wander around.
