The town is so cozy and lovely, and the community is very sweet. The art culture along the coastal walk was amazing to experience and the whole place is just comfortably walkable! The beach-side food places we ate at were great and the beaches are very relaxing. Port Macquarie is a town of about 50,000 people spread over quite a wide area. In 1821, Port Macquarie was founded as a penal settlement, replacing Newcastle as the destination for convicts who had committed secondary crimes in New South Wales. For the tourist, there is a lot to see and do, with a walk along the marina, the Breakwell and the coastal path a must. Beautiful beaches such as Town Beach, Shelley Beach, Oxley Beach and Flynn Beach - all within a few kilometers. A Hastings River cruise is a must. Great coastal area with plenty of beaches and great walks. Has all the shopping you would need. My personal opinion is that it was a bit busy for my taste but overall, you cannot fault it for the beautiful coastline. We only stayed the night as a stopover to elsewhere (which is mostly what we do in Port Mac) so not near the beaches and busy town centre.
