Nieuwpoort consists of the main town which in a little distance inland, and Nieuwpoort-Bad which is at the seaside. Make sure you pick the right one. Nieuwpoort-Bad is one of the better Belgian seaside towns with shops, good hotels and apartments, and entertainment. It’s also a good base from which to drive or take the Littoral tram along the coast. Parking can be a pain, but most of the seaside towns offer 30mins free then €1 or €1.50 per hour. But you have to register your number plate and take a ticket for the free 30 mins option. It's very easy to take the Kusttram which takes you from De Panne to Knokke and back. No car needed esp. during low season since tram has many stops between those two towns. There is the very interesting Paul Delvaux museum in Koksijde. The Westfront Nieuwpoort Museum which tells the history of Nieuwpoort during WW I. I would rate Nieuwpoort Beach one of the best places on the coast. The streets are kept clean and enjoyable throughout the day. At night-time, everything goes quiet and peaceful. Plenty of good restaurants and bars without having to endure night-time noise and silly behaviour. The old town is small but very attractive and there are a few interesting things to see there, many connected to the First World War. The beach is very nice. There is a nature reserve that you can get to by the free ferry which is worth going to, and there are lots of walks that you could do. Beyond that there isn't a lot to keep you in Nieuwpoort, so it is a great benefit that you can take the coastal tram from Nieuwpoort so you can explore other places.Guest review byJohnUnited Kingdom - 10
It was a short stay but I enjoyed it like always.
It was a short stay but I enjoyed it like always. One of my favourite places at the Belgian coast because of the dike (no cars and a lot of space), the mouth of river Ijzer, the history of the world wars (mainly world war I) and the multiple walking possibilities. If you don’t go to Nieuwpoort Bad but to the Nieuwpoort town...
If you don’t go to Nieuwpoort Bad but to the Nieuwpoort town area or to Koksijde, you may be better off.
