FAQs about hotels in Shanghai

A Beacon of Modern China

A beacon of 21st-century China, Shanghai is modernising at an electrifying rate. Nowhere is this more evident than the skyscraper-punctuated Pudong commercial district. The most distinct - the Oriental Pearl Tower - has a ball at the top and bottom and offers fabulous city views. A number of towers also twist as they go up – a feat of contemporary engineering.

This side of the city also houses Shanghai Pudong International Airport, while Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is over the Huangpu River in the Puxi district. An area of older and less dominating buildings, Puxi features the elegant Bund area whose varied architecture includes a surprising array of Art Deco.

With a choice of shopping centres and small shops beneath brightly lit neon signs just like Chinatowns across the world, Shanghai shopping is fantastic.

Other must-see Shanghai attractions include the wonderful Shanghai Museum and the Jade Buddha Temple. For a break from the hustle and bustle head to the Yuyuan Gardens, the beach or peaceful Zhujiajiao Water Town in the west.

Whether you choose one of the Shanghai hotels, apartments or hostels, take time to go to a tea house, a Chinese institution. Also worth sampling are Shanghai hairy crab, steamed dumplings and the freshwater fish so popular with locals.

Enjoyed the ease of using a Didi.

Enjoyed the ease of using a Didi. For five people it was very inexpensive and so quick. Seldom had to wait more than 3 minutes for a car. Plenty of choices for eating out. Needed more time to see all we wanted to see.

Immaculate. Everything is new and in good working order.

Immaculate. Everything is new and in good working order. The rooms are beautiful. The staff so accommodating. We got an upgrade just because, we never even had to ask. The location is perfect. A 2 min walk to line 14 Xeipu station. From here you can access all the attractions. It's quiet here, you can hire Hello Bikes through Alipay. They are about £0.40 for an hour. You can cycle all the way down the park/river edge. No cars there. There is a 7/11 right at the base of the hotel. We had a huge balcony and great views. If I ever return to Shanghai I will definitely stay here. Just perfect. Don't expect great WiFi anywhere really. It's China. The whole country is a bit sketchy for westerners. But it's no bother. I just love this country.

Shanghai is an exciting city filled with history, interesting people and food. However be prepared to spent on transportation as some areas are not well connected by buses or the metro. Being able to converse in Mandarin would ease communication, however the use of google translate can help too!

I loved everything, is clean,is safe,is beautiful,is very well organized and easy to travel with the underground tube It was very crowded but it's understandable, very hot weather 36-38°Celsius, the people are very nice and willing to help even if they don't speak English or vice-versa, we had a brilliant time 💖

It was only a quick 3 day look, not nearly long enough, but something very different. We went when it was Chinese school holidays,i had no idea, millions of people everywhere, traffic a night mare, they has police everywhere to control the traffic and the public, and so hot 36c on one day and 35c on other when we left it was 37c.Most of the swimming pools are inside hotels not outside, which i did find a bit strange considering how hot it gets there.Taxis took us to the wrong locations a few times, not many speak English there. We did not travel great distances there because of the time schedule we had, hence really needed more time, there was so much i wanted to see.You need to have cash on you for the taxis and of course some will rip you of.In conclusion i would say it was quite good, but not the best holiday Ive had,we do lean more to beach type holidays, one thing i would say take plenty of money with you,its quite pricey

Shanghai is a beautiful place and the people are okay. However, for a black person we found the people were somewhat intrusive. Theytook videos and pictures of us and my sons were frustrated a bit. Told them thats how celebrities feel

We stayed at Joyful Yard twice on our transit in Shanghai and the hotel is amazing! Best value for money. Stuff check us in very early (around 7-8am) which is normally unusual for the hotels. Breakfast is good - nice selection of European and Chinese meals, good coffee and vending machine. Rooms were big, modern and clean. Transfer from and to the airport was very useful. We really enjoyed the hotel both times👍

I travel a lot but for the first time I felt at home in a hotel room. I didn’t want to go out in Shanghai :) Actually everything was perfect - the location is the best, the room so clean, cozy and spacious, it was an apartment. And the view…stunning!

I have stayed in this hotel earlier also and this was my third visit to the same hotel, the best thing I like about this hotel is its right above a metro station. The location is very close from Maglev if you are coming from the Pudong airport.

Large, beautiful rooms. There is a cafe and a few restaurants within the resort style hotel. It’s located about 10 minutes drive from Shanghai’s Pudong Airport and has a free shuttle bus
