From Antiquity to Modernity in Cosy Cologne

Founded by the Romans in 38 BC and idyllically located on the Rhine River, Cologne offers the perfect blend of historical and modern Germany. There’s no place more picturesque to drink a Kölsch beer and eat a schnitzel than on the banks of the River Rhine. Here you’ll find the Altstad, or Old Town, with the impressive Cologne Dom on the skyline.

Visitors to Cologne in February can dance the days away at the Carnival Parade. In December, no trip to Cologne’s magical Christmas markets is complete without a steaming mug of Glühwein.

The charm extends to other seasons as well, thanks to the medieval wonders of the Cologne Cathedral and the Twelve Romanesque churches. Learn about the city’s history at the Roman-Germanic Museum or take a postmodern approach at Museum Ludwig. Whether historic or culinary, a trip to the Chocolate Museum can complete any tour.

Booking.com offers 260 different accommodations, ranging from apartments to mid-budget hotels to guest houses. So whether you’re stepping out of a plane at the Cologne Bonn Airport or a shop on Hohe Strasse, you will be sure to have a cosy room for those cool European nights.

It is a very vibrant, welcoming and friendly city.

It is a very vibrant, welcoming and friendly city. There are plenty of traditional brewery pubs with character ie Fruh, Gaffels Kolsh, Malzmuhle, Reissdorf. Very good atmosphere for beer drinkers. Very picturesque walking alongside the River Rhine at one of its widest points. The majestic Koln Dom stands handsomely in the city centre right next to the main central railway station, extremely iconic.

All the sights and sounds were a delight. But it is a large city and has a homelessness problem around the main station - did not spoil the trip but was very sad to see. Also, go to Wuppertal for the overhead railway, only 30 minutes train ride from Koln

2 days walking around was very easy and this is a city easy to navigate, don't miss the chocolate museum, plenty of other museums to check out as well as the old cathedral and churches. make sure you try some of the many Kolsch's available if you like beer, and check out Peter's Brewery though bookings may be necessary as this is a popular place with locals.

Cologne is a charming city with a rich history, but in terms of sightseeing and activities, it feels more like a short stopover than a destination for an extended stay. The iconic Cologne Cathedral is definitely worth visiting — it’s an architectural masterpiece and the standout attraction in the city. The surrounding old town is pleasant for a walk, with some cozy cafés, bars, and local shops. However, beyond that, there isn’t a whole lot to see or do. The city center is relatively small, and most major sights can be comfortably explored in a day or two. If you're someone who enjoys museums, there are a few decent options like the Ludwig Museum (for modern art) or the Roman-Germanic Museum, but they’re not must-sees unless you're particularly interested in those topics. Overall, Cologne is a nice city for a quick visit — great for a weekend trip or a short stop between other destinations in Germany. Just don’t expect a wide variety of attractions or experiences. It’s cozy, convenient, and has a laid-back vibe, but it likely won’t fill more than 1–2 days of your itinerary.

Nice city, some good architecture, loved the harbour area, and the Old Town. Boat trip better than the bus tour, in part due to the traffic in the city. Nearly everyone spoke English so communication was very good. Cathedral is magnificent and amazing it was not damaged during the war. Tourist information office nearby who were very helpful.

We only stayed overnight on this trip, but Cologne was very busy with crowds everywhere. A lot of stag and hen do's. We have stayed in Cologne before for the Christmas markets, The first time was wonderful, magical even. We went back some years later and it was horrendous. So crowded, you couldn't move for people and were being constantly pushed. Cologne at Christmas has become a victim of its own success. Having said that Cologne is a wonderful city with plenty to see and do. I would think that probably the best time to visit would be Spring or Autumn.

Room is functional and clean. It is not big but cleverly use of space to place hook to hang clothes, it just take 5 mins walk to reach the train station which can take you to the Cologne centre. Breakfast is good with variety of breads, pastry, ham and cheese. US kind of breakfast with bacon, pancake, scrambled eggs are also available. Wide selection of coffee and tea too. Parking is free and near the perimeter wall beside the hotel, best to check which parking spot is OK to park.

Great location, very easy access to the airport (shop and cafe inside the airport building open 24/7 - very useful) and very close to excellent train link to Cologne city centre and the Lanxess arena. Surprisingly quiet room despite proximity to airport. Comfortable and modern hotel. Good view over the airport from the bar/restaurant on the top floor.

It was our third time in Cologne, and that hotel was the best choice! Great location, very clean, and hospitable. The guy from staff (sorry, I forgot his name) has an excellent sense of humor. When we arrived our apartment was occupied, so he gave us their best, larger apartment. Highly recommended.

The location of the hotel was perfect, with the river, city centre and cathedral all within a short walk. One of the rooms had a view over the river. If you're looking for somewhere affordable to stay in Cologne then this is definitely worth a look.
