Whilst initial impressions may not appear promising, Nordhausen does have a pretty old town, some interesting museums and galleries and pleasant parks. It is also a very compact city with many of the main attractions easily reached on foot. It also has a small tram system which is useful for getting about. Nordhausen is a more interesting town than you might think.
Nordhausen is a more interesting town than you might think. Most of it had to be rebuilt in the communist style after WW2, but there is still an old quarter with cobbled streets and timber framed houses which was restored and the contrasts between the two are interesting to see. Couple of nice parks as well. Barfuss restaurant in the old town is nice. Town is southern terminus of the Harz narrow gauge railway - well worth a trip. Friendly welcome and staff all pleasant. I had quite a small room but perfectly adequate and comfortable. Even if you are on the main road side of the hotel the soundproof windows work well. Tha apartment is fine, shower (private) and kitchen outside the main room, ensuite toilet. The hosts are extremely nice and they run a very good restaurant downstairs.
