FAQs about hotels in Caen

A Tribute to Norman History

Surrounded by Normandy countryside, Caen is a proud city which pays poignant tribute to its past. It suffered greatly during World War II and although most damage has been carefully rebuilt, one monument remaining partly in ruins is Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux church.

It sits opposite a floral park overlooked by the stately 11th-century Abbaye aux Hommes, built by William the Conqueror, who is buried here. His wife is buried in the equally grand Abbaye aux Dames by an even larger park to the east. Between the 2 lies another of William’s creations – the remarkably intact 11th-century Norman castle which now houses museums of Normandy history and fine art.

Another unmissable museum is the Memorial for Peace, a sensitive portrayal of the horrors of war, with particular emphasis on the D-Day landings on beaches north of the city. One road leading there passes Pegasus Bridge and the large Caen-Ouistreham passenger ferry port. The city is also served by Carpiquet Airport and a train station.

The surrounding streets are lined with shops and restaurants, and there are a few half-timbered buildings dotted around. The bars on Rue Ecuyére offer some of the best nightlife and are popular with the large student population.

Booking.com’s range of Caen accommodation includes luxury hotels, cheap B&BS and apartments with parking.

The Abbeys are stunning, the town is flat so easy to walk around. There are regular markets, the Sunday one we went to was quite big with lots of fresh food. The harbour is a nice spot with a line of bars and restaurants nearby, my favourite being an Irish bar (O'Donnells) for a well kept pint (or three) of Guinness!

Buzzing, historic, University city with something for everyone, whether you like eating out, shopping, parks or sightseeing. For a relaxing walk go to Parc de la Colline aux Oiseaux where you'll see a beautiful rose garden. Over the road is Memorial de Caen museum which is a must for all those interested in the events of the Normandy landings and more. For architecture, see the castle, the abbeys and townhall. If you are a coeliac, you must eat at Les Gens Heureux. The menu is very small, but the quality is exceptional. Try their cheesecake in particular.

A fantastically modern yet historical and vibrant city with excellent transport links. Lots of bars and restaurants offering a variety of food styles. Very welcoming and friendly. The local bus service is cheap and easy to use so you don't need a car. It's close to the Port. We hired bikes to go beyond the city and used the bus network to see other towns. This is such a great city you will not be disappointed with a short or long visit.

We loved Caen, a charming city, we loved the people and the Castle in the middle of town. Lots of nice places to eat and go out. It is very close to coast and to other objectives like Mont St Michel and St Malo. We loved the fantastic cheeses from Calvados, typically found in Caen.

    Caen was really great experience.

Caen was really great experience. If you are a WW2 buff or someone who is really interested in the Medieval or Middle Ages, there are loads of locations to visit in and around Caen. About Caen - it was also great to go somewhere calm and safe, with very little risk of crime. The public transportation there is fantastic with buses and trams that go everywhere - trains are less frequent, perhaps on the hour, but beware, they become full very quickly. However, if you plan ahead and buy your tickets in advance, travelling to other parts of Normandy on day-trips from Caen, shouldn't be a problem. If you are willing to venture further beyond Caen: The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is certainly worth going to, and there are WW2 museums and various D-Day locations dotted all over Normandy. Then there is really good food. A special shout out to the amazing food of Le Goeland at Lion-sur-mer! A Twisto bus 22 service took us there and back from Gare de Caen. A 48 min ride, each way. We also had brilliant savoury crepes at Pourquois Pas in Bayeux, a 15-20 min train ride away from Gare de Caen. We were in Caen for only 4 days and that was nowhere near enough - we definitely needed 7 days at the very least, and most likely, two weeks. Will be back in Caen sometime again soon.

A small funky hotel at walking distance to restaurants, shopping and the historical center. The room felt like our boat-not big but every space was well utilized. The bed was super comfortable and the area was quiet during the night. A well stocked breakfast buffet with all kinds of tempting choices. The staff was very friendly and helpful. A private parking space was available which meant no stress with parking meters on the street.

The room was clean, modern and functional - but of budget hotel standard. It is a functional budget hotel in the outskirts of Caen. I found that the standard of the Ace Hotel was better than that of Ibis Hotels, which I also used twice on my short Normandy vacation.
