I was only there 1 night and until 3pm the following day. It's a really charming town with friendly local people, great food and drink options, history and culture and the stunning backdrop of the Pyrénées. I visited the Musee de Beaux Arts which was brilliant, Blend coffee and had a lovely evening with superb beers at Craft de Pyrénées.

Unfortunately, I was only here for a weekend trip, and I didn't have time to visit many of the local sights. A lovely area, especially if you like hiking. Biarritz is a 90 minute drive away and, of course, the Pyrenees are only a few hours drive away, too.

We arrived very late in the evening.

We arrived very late in the evening. We found the funicular in the dark, but it was out of service for the night, so we hauled our overstuffed luggage up the zigzag ramp. The desk clerk was very helpful in orienting us to the hotel and city. The hotel is close to the train station and car rentals, back down the hill. However, there is a lot of construction in the city center, and many one way streets. It took a VERY long time go less than the one mile back to the hotel with the rental car. Other than that, Pau is an interesting city, made famous by the NBC broadcasts of the Tour de France. And the palm trees are real, unlike those in Mexican Hat, Utah.

    What a charming town.

What a charming town. The pedestrian streets are full of shops, restaurants, wine bars, bakeries -- you name it. The city has a nice blend of historical buildings and modern amenities. And the view of the Pyrenees is spectacular. We were there in a less-busy season, but there is still lots of energy, and people out & about. Make sure you pay attention to shop & restaurant closing hours & days -- you may have to plan ahead a little. It's a great jumping-off place to explore the mountains -- and make sure you visit the whitewater park (Parc des Eaux Vives). We would go back to Pau in a heartbeat,

    A wonderful city to visit!

A wonderful city to visit! We arrived in glorious sunshine and the view towards the Pyrenees was stunning! There are many places to eat. We ate in Les Papilles Insolites close by the Ibis hotel. The restaurant was quirky and reasonably priced - fabulous food and friendly service. We only stayed for one night in Pau but wished we could have stayed longer to explore the city properly.

We chose Pau as a good stop-off point between Hendaye and Toulouse. The city has a lot to offer with the chateau, cathedral and the River Gave running through it. It's a very pretty place with the backdrop of the Pyrenees. We discovered it's an important centre for kayaking and happened to be there the day the Olympic torch went through the city on its way to Paris 2024. We tried to hire a car one day, but neither Hertz nor Avis could accommodate us, so if you're planning to hire a car, we'd recommend doing it ahead of time. We were there two days and two nights and I felt a third night would have been good.

We had a family room which was perfect. Whilst we were only three, it could easily accommodate five. The hotel's located in an attractive square near to many of the main attractions of Pau. If arriving by train, take the funicular up and use Google maps from there. It's not far at all. The staff were helpful. We had a bicycle which we needed to leave in the luggage room. The continental breakfast was fine. There were some good eateries nearby.

Good size room, beds so comfortable, Breakfast was basic but it was better than nothing. Not too far from Pau train station about €15 by taxi. We stayed over to watch a rugby game at Stade Hameau Stadium, 10mins walk from the hotel. Hotel is safe and secured in the night. Gates closed and locked in the night with security guard that control the gate.
