I knew nothing of Carlisle prior to my visit and we didn't have long to look round but my main feeling was to wonder why nobody's mentioned how lovely it is. It has some stunning historical buildings to see and the city had a nice vibe. It's also really conveniently located for the Lake District and has rail links directly to it. Oh, it's a hive of activity and we love it.
Oh, it's a hive of activity and we love it. The Lanes shopping centre, right at the heart of Carlisle is a must for shoppers. It's great to see this in the city centre, where other towns and city planners have allowed the destruction of city centres by allowing out of town retail parks to cause shoppers to abandon the heart of these great places, Glasgow and Dumfries to name just two. The night life is also amazing with pubs to suit all styles and budgets and some are a real laugh. If you are into your history there's a castle right in the middle if the city centre too. The only issue in August 2025 I'd the roadworks and infrastructure improvements which have been going on for ages but I'm sure once complete it'll be a much easier city to drive in.Guest review byDuckworthUnited Kingdom

Attention to every detail can be seen and the housekeeping staff are doing a great job, the lodge was spotless. Location ideal for both a day out in Carlisle and to jump back on the motorway.
