Enjoyed the history of Derry and the Walls tour. Lots of lovely walks. The river is pretty and the city centre full of character. Didn't enjoy the 'fireworks/bangers' that local youths were setting off randomly. I found that quite intimidating so close to the city walls. Made me fearful of walking the streets to the Bogside area to check out the wall murals and historical area. Be mindful of buying food at Don's chippy on Bishop Street. We ordered fish and chips for 4. They gave us 2 pieces of fish each! We didn't know. Everyone in the place smirked and were keen to tell us that we wouldn't be able to eat it all. Pity the owner wasn't so forthcoming! We had to throw over half of it away. Just be upfront with customers, especially if they are out of towners. Such a waste of our money and their food. The walled city is an interesting visit, but not for the fainthearted. It is possible to walk around the entire perimeter, but it is not all accessible to wheelchair users, and there are some steep inclines and steps. Feels like a fairy tale city. Very lovely, walkable as long as you can manage hills. Tone of history, so do your homework before you go, and you'll get more out of it. We loved walking around the city walls and walking through...
We loved walking around the city walls and walking through other neighborhoods. The Bogside History Walking tour was well worth it. We would have liked to take another tour but did not have the time. The Tower museum was very interesting for a history of Derry and for a cute exhibit on Derry Girls. We also enjoyed the Guildhall and its exhibits. We regretted not being able to spend some time across the river to see the Unionist murals. We also recommend taking the train to Coleraine to catch the Causeway Rambler bus--very easy to stop at Giant's Causeway, Dunluce Castle, Bushmills, Portrush and other sights. Some veg-friendly food recs: Bishops Gate Hotel- only a few options, but really good. Visit the tourist center opposite the guild hall and do the walking tour with the local guide who was himself part of the Bloody Sunday March. Terry is the local guide who conducts daily walking tour. The tour starts from the outside of the tourist center and you can buy the ticket from the tourist center.
