Strontian is a pleasant village overlooking Loch Sunart with a small secondary school, post office and a few shops where you can buy everyday necessities as well as tourist gifts. The Bothy Bar (part of the Strontian Hotel) serves good food and dogs are allowed. It is a good base for exploring the Ardnamurchan peninsula (including the famous lighthouse) although the single-track roads beyond Strontian can be challenging even to experienced drivers!

Strontian is well situated to explore glens, lochs, magical coastal places, superb woods, and the fine Ardnamurchan peninsula. The weather was a bit mixed during our three full days, but you are never stuck for places to visit. The Benview Phoenix is located at the foot of a very fine “Kirk and coffin” route, and worth a walk on its own. Polloch and Loch Doilet are only a short, though exciting, drive away.

Strontian is a quiet community at the head of Loch Sunart.

Strontian is a quiet community at the head of Loch Sunart. It's an ideal location for enjoying complete relaxation in outstanding scenery. We stayed at Kilcamb Lodge and had dinner there most evenings (exceptional!). We also had lunch at The Salen Inn (lovely!), just a short drive away. We took a wonderful half-day boat trip from Salen and were lucky enough to see masses of wildlife. We drove, then walked to some wonderful white-sand beaches.

Stunning scenery and surrounded by peaceful nature.

Stunning scenery and surrounded by peaceful nature. Mountains that can glow pink at dusk, eagles soar overhead. Stunning beaches nearby. A wild and well kept secret of a place. Dinner at Kilcamb hotel brasserie was fantastic. Stay at Heatherbank Guesthouse was perfect.

Well provided village given its size.

Well provided village given its size. For hillwalking all the local peaks are accessible but only two wholly on foot. The others need a car or an overnight and some of the minor roads are challenging in such a remote location.

A very attentive , helpful and friendly host. Perfect for bike travellers. The bikes were stored inside safely. Graham was a generous and talented cook and the waitress efficient and warm. Great use of the hot tub. A beautiful spot with easy walking to the loch. And cycling on Perfect little roads.

We had a lovely time at Graeme’s hotel. It was a little off the beaten track but easy to find. When we arrived (later than anticipated), Graeme could not have been more accommodating. He offered a choice of bedrooms and made us feel very welcome. While the hotel isn’t the most modern, it’s clear it’s ran with love and care for entertaining guests. It was cheap and cheerful, and I wouldn’t hesitate to return.

What a hidden gem! We have never before been to the Ardnamurchan peninsula and decided to visit the area on a whim. The hotel is beautifully located alongside Loch Sunart. We stayed in a beautiful loch side view room. The facilities are great. We had the best dinner ever during our visit to Scotland. The chef deserves a Michelin star.

The location - Strontian - is extremely beautiful and the house is only a few minutes' walk away from both the shops (and information centre) in one direction and the Ariundle Nature Research (and tea rooms) in the others.
