A quaint little Georgian town on the edge of the Lake...

A quaint little Georgian town on the edge of the Lake District, with a scenic harbour. The Rum Story & Jefferson's Shop is a must see and The Beacon Museum is definitely worth a visit. You can walk on the pier all the way to the end, be careful in bad weather, the block floor is not even. Lots of nice buildings around, many have seen better days but worth a walk around the town. The courtyard and gardens at the little church on Lowther Street are very scenic. The waters in the Queens Dock are an orange colour from the iron leaking in, certainly makes it unique and memorable (investigations into resolving it are underway). The Former Wellington Pit site gives a great view over the town. Lots of local pubs around, I must give a special mention to The Vagabond bar / restaurant, probably the best pizzas we've ever tasted anywhere.

We lived in Whitehaven for many years but left in 1986. Town has definitely gone downhill since then. Only reason for visit was for funeral of close friend. Driving there was a nightmare with so much roadworks especially around Carlisle. The area around Whitehaven is always a delight but be prepared for delays. Our general feeling after visit was that we were glad to have left as it is so remote.

Whitehaven has quite a history - and seems to have suffered over the decades as critical industries such as mining, fishing and ship-building have gone into decline. I would guess that more recently, a fair amount of public money has gone into restoring the town's fortunes. In places, this has succeeded - in others, the town is still sadly quite run down. But don't let that stop you visiting this historic and charming little gem of a town.

It was really nice for going for a walk along the coast and up on the cliffs. We didn't go out in the evening but there seemed to be a number of nice bars and places to eat. We have an EV and there were quite a few places nearby that we could charge

The harbour area has plenty of history and is excellent for walking and exploring. We very much liked Anna’s, a very nice, safe and trendy cocktail bar with great food. Plenty of shops and other eateries as well. Good base for exploring the area and the Lake District is only 30 minutes away. The short train trip to Workington is worth it just for the views as you travel right on the coastline.

Fantastic town steeped in history & tastefully restored...

Fantastic town steeped in history & tastefully restored harbour area completed to rightfully restore and celibrate the mining history. There are poignant reminders of how difficult life was for the mining community, especially those who died working in such harsh conditions. The area is very hilly & the mobility impaired would struggle in some areas. There is a fabulous range of bars & cafes across the town and harbour areas and not just the usual ranges you see in most towns, there literally is something for everyone and most places are very pet & dog friendly too. The people are wonderful, warm & welcoming, Cumbrian hospitality will humble you. If you like hills, astonishing scenery and an area steeped in local history, this is the place for you. Also, whitehaven is perfectly placed to use as a base to get to the fells and wider area. We live in rural Cambridgehire, so the hills, mountains & lakes are a thing of immense natural beauty and fills you with a sense of wonder at nature. It's almost impossible to describe adequately, but you will feel calmed and restored by this beautiful area. A tip would be to visit Whinlatter Forest & the visiotrs centre & cafe, we went there for the Parkrun and the panoramic views from this natural high point are otherworldly. We are all different, but just go there and experience it. Reconnect with nature and fill your soul with the sweet crisp air, there is a deep peace to be found in the mountains and lakes.

I stayed in Room 33, cannot fault the facilities or cleanliness but unfortunately the radiator would not turn off which meant the room was either stifling hot or you opened the window and the traffic noise disturbed you Food for breakfast and in the restaurant in the evening was excellent. The best thing about this hotel is the staff who do their upmost to please you. Cannot remember all the names but in particular, Natalie in the evenings and Emma in the daytime are amazing

Good breakfast choice and hot when arrived. Staff attentive at breakfast and quick service. Hosts very knowledgeable of local area and places to eat in the evening. Great location for visiting Whitehaven and surrounding area. Plenty of private parking. We had the room at the top with the four poster bed, worth the extra money for the large room and the very comfortable bed. Would stay again.

Clean comfortable room with a decent sized walk-in 'waterfall' shower. Like a small hotel room, there is only a bathroom sink, but several bottles of water were provided with tea/coffee making facilities. z
