utterly stunning Hotel, staff are delightful so friendly and helpful, the rooms are all beautiful with individual touches and so incredibly pretty (well Mine was ) my Grandson with me loved his room and was very impressed with the hotel, The Gardens are so well laid out with little private corners to sit in and such a huge array of spring flowers it was so relaxing to spend time sitting out in them, the Bar was super really great Barman, wines beers etc were really good, now to the restaurant, WOW, the breakfasts are cooked to order and such a choice the freshness and quality of food is some of the best i have ever eaten in Hotels and i travel a lot, I particularly loved the avocado on the sour dough with spicy tomato salsa topped with poached eggs now that's how to start the day, My grandson loved the eggs benedict and from the general response from the other guests the other options were equally appreciated. again great professional service from very attentive waiters and nothing was to much trouble, Onto Dinner, again incredible we went with sharing choice which was an amazing selection of starters, smoked salmon, king prawns, Pate salads and lovely little croutons, the main a Chateaubriand OMG! melt in the mouth deliciousness, with all the usual accompaniments but to a much higher standard than in general. followed by tarte Tatin mmmm incredible. served with our choice of a Pinot noir again great pairing. will be back again and again, Thankyou to all at the Hotel for a wonderful couple of days.

Perfect! Annexe was exactly as the photos. Very clean, not one cobweb (and believe me I looked due to spider phobia!) Excellent facilities, had a nice homely feel. Plenty of space. Shower was nice and powerful. Breakfast was delicious and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Loved my stay, would stay again.

The property was full of old world charm - an exceptional place to stay - we ate at the formal dining room and had a wonderful dining experience. The staff (in particular the sommelier) were excellent and went above and beyond what should be expected of them.

Winchester’s history, the Cathedral has to be right up there, it was incredible and would definitely go back, there were some beautiful walks nearby, along the river Itchen, and very clean. It’s very easy getting around, the train station is minutes away( 7 minutes to the airport 😉) So many pkaces to eat, The Vine did an amazing veggie breakfast and loved the Royal Oak pub, oldest in England.

Some towns and cities in England are only historic in the...

Some towns and cities in England are only historic in the sense that a thoughtful (or shamefaced) Council has preserved a few remnants of the past among the concrete, steel and glass of modernity. Winchester however is among the honoured ones where history outweighs the contemporary. It is impossible to miss the past even on the shortest of walks in the city centre - across the road from the newish retail centre are house walls containing Anglo Saxon and Norman stone carvings as an example. Winchester is justly proud of its history from ancient Britons through being a Roman settlement to Alfred setting the capital of his hard won battles for supremacy over the Vikings in Winchester to the later Norman conquest establishing the castle and cathedral and the presence of monarchy right through to the 1800s. Winchester, it has to be said is one of my favourite English cities - I keep returning for the simple reason of its consciousness about its historical focus. It is a city that behaves more like a small countryside market town and long may that image remain

Of course the Cathedral was the highlight. We attended two Evensong services which were amazing. The map of Winchester from the information office was rather confusing with lots of people we talked to agreeing that 'it might have been printed up-side-down!

    Do visit the cathedral.

Do visit the cathedral. You do pay but then can go on an excellent free guided tour lasting an hour or more. Recommend Park and Ride for visiting the centre. Lovely walks along the river. Guided tours of the town are available. Surrounding area many attractions eg Jane Austen's house, Gilbert White's house and a number of National Trust properties

Great location . Hotel in need of major upgrade . Not a chance it is 4 star . Felt very misled . Paid a decent price but didn’t feel received anywhere near the standard of a 4 star more like 2 star hotel . Felt sorry for the staff who are being clearly unde managed . One person running the show at breakfast is so poor . Poor housekeeping .. rooms dusty and ill equipped . Seems that part reviews aren’t acted on whatsoever . Such a shame as it could be fabulous with it having a prime location and parking available .

The Mercure Wessex is ideal for visiting Winchester. The location could not be better - our room had a great view of the cathedral (see photo), and the hotel is within very easy walking distance of the main shops and restaurants. The parking is pretty convenient although not free - £15/day. The breakfast is expensive too. But the rooms are large and the beds are comfy. It's worth noting that the cathedral bells on a Sunday morning start around 10am. They sound glorious but not everyone would be a fan.

Reception was good, very helpful with directions to rooms, lots of parking spaces available. Q hotels have a good deal on first time dining in the restaurant and breakfasts if you book in advance. Restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere with lovely food. Company policy is to only tip waiters if you feel they deserve it. The shower in my room was very easy to adjust to a power shower. Winchester cathedral is 20 minutes away

We had a one night stay in March '25 and are very happy. The Loft is comfortable, spacious and well equipped, Just a few minutes walk from the town centre, and at the time we booked it was better value than the local hotels. Luckily we got to park right outside the front door. We will definitely look again next time we need to stay in Winchester.

The hotel is in a perfect location to see Winchester. They kindly upgraded us, as it was our anniversary. The suite was amazing with a 4 poster bed. The barman was helpful when I could not decide what to have. Breakfast was busy, but the young waiter was helpful and the food tasty.
