FAQs about hotels in Hvar

Echoes of the Age of Empires

Hvar is the largest city on the Croatian island of the same name within the Adriatic Sea. The wildly undulating coastline formed a natural harbour here, a fact which didn’t go unnoticed by the Venetians, who captured it as part of their empire. The Venetian Fortress sits atop a hill and 13th-century ramparts descend to the old town.

Another castle from Napoleonic times is on a different hill offering beautiful views over red roofs towards the offshore Pakleni islands sheltering the port. Ferries link Hvar to neighbouring Brač and Vis islands, Split and Ancona in Italy.

Given the size of the city, the amount of Hvar accommodation is staggering, and Booking.com offers everything from luxury hotels with pools to cheap guest houses and beachfront apartments. Although most beaches are rocky, their scenic setting and warm turquoise waters are still a draw.

At the heart of the city is the largest square in Dalmatia. Restaurants and bars spill out onto its cobbles, ending at St Stephen’s Cathedral with its see-through belltower. Around the same time the cathedral was going up, one of Europe’s oldest theatres was constructed in the waterfront Arsenal. The Loggia is the only remain of the Governor’s Palace, and the Hvar Heritage Museum helps to put all this in context.

The main town of Hvar is very small but historic, and could be easily visited in a day. It is also a great place to end a vigorous holiday in other parts of Europe if you just want to relax and explore a bit. The views are spectacular, people are friendly, it is not overly crowded (we were there a bit after peak season) and prices are not totally unreasonable. If you are looking for more adventures, choose your activities carefully as most of the day trips are rather long and mostly pretty boring, except for the people you meet along the way. A great little restaurant/bar is Falko along the seawall near Pebble Beach; excellent food, great service and a fabulous view.

This was the perfect Adriatic vacation.

This was the perfect Adriatic vacation. Best mix of historical sites, sea-side exursions, excellent restaurants, and time to relax as well. Be prepared to walk a lot and have proper footware for walking on the rocky beaches.

I loved Hvar.

I loved Hvar. Scenery beautiful, great restaurants in the town at the back of the main square, very pretty settings some are expensive to other European travels I've been on. Our favourite restaurants were Black Pepper, Fig, Junior. Would not choose to visit July/August main town can be very busy. Sun beds along the coast can be expensive to hire. Saying this I travelled as a couple In September and we loved Hvar.

Love, love, love Hvar, however, it is tough going if you are not fabulously fit. I am in my mid 60s and swim 3km a week and walk about 5kms a day. My husband has a prosthetic leg. I found the steps challenging, they were almost impossible for my husband. Hindsight.... stay in Split and use the ferry to do a day trip - leave on the early ferry and stay until the last daily ferry. Hvar is seasonal a few restaurants in the back blocks are starting to close for the year. By the end of October we are told 1 restaurant remains open until April. Oh... I should mention is it not a cheap getaway.

Lovely atmosphere and very settled weather.

Lovely atmosphere and very settled weather. A variety of excursions and walks Swimming is nice but if you like sandy beaches then you need to wear waterproof shoes because the beach is stoney. Food is international but you can find Croatian dishes too.

Hotel is as close as can be from where the ferry arrives (still a bit of a stroll) From the word go we felt welcomed and valued. Arriving hotel owner took our heavy bags up to our room, and the room felt larger than advertised, very modern n recently decorated. View from balcony amazing! Breakfast really nice though not an extensive menu. Throughly recommended! Owner also was very helpful about local car/scooter hire and v willing to give info about Hvar. Would definitely stay again and nowhere else!

We loved our stay at Hotel Forr apartment in Hvar! The apartment was super clean, spacious, and had everything we needed. Bonus points for the washing machine and the proper filter coffee machine – with really good coffee provided! The bed and pillows were very comfortable, which made for a great night's sleep. We especially enjoyed sitting out on the balcony with a glass of wine, taking in the lovely view. The hosts were really friendly and helpful too. Can definitely recommend this place.

Perfect location with amazing sea view. Room very spacious, comfortable and clean. We stayed in family room which was perfect for us. Our daughter's loved the pool. Breakfast was really nice, eating overlooking the beach. Local arranged taxis into Hvar town. A beautiful hotel.

The premises were in a lovely location & very peaceful after the bustle of Hvar town centre. However as all other reviews commented, it was a 15 min walk along the beautiful coastline to reach the centre. ( The local hotel cat was a gorgeous addition too😻)

It's a nice hotel, probably one of the biggest in Hvar - we had a front room with balcony so had amazing views. Reception and concierge very helpful. Breakfast also good.
