Bali's Peaceful Retreat
If you are seeking a hideaway from Bali’s chaotic Kuta, Ubud provides a welcome respite with its secluded paths, calming temples and specialised spa resorts. Surrounded by rice paddies, coconut trees and lush forests of green, Ubud is seen as the cultural centre of Bali.
The road leading up to Ubud features little villages specialising in handicrafts like Celuk (silver jewellery), Batuan (paintings) and Mas (wood carvings). Ubud, itself, produces all sorts of handicrafts in its peaceful foothills. There are also numerous art galleries, workshops and courses on offer for the budding artist.
The Monkey Forest is a popular tourist drawcard with its ravenous monkey population lunging at anything resembling food. The 9th-century Goa Gajah, or Elephant Cave, showcases the island’s historic past and there is the regular Ubud Market for modern-day souvenir hunters.

I loved how green the scenery was. And there is a lot of art in every form from paintings to gold and silver jewelry. There are so many shops. And the monkey forest is also a highlight around the center of ubud. There are also many international cuisines to choose from such as Japanese, Mexican, and Indian. Ubud was a much busier city than I had anticipated, and I was pleasantly surprised! We loved the busy city and all the culture it held. We could have spent days wandering around exploring new places. Some of the highlights for us were going on a huge day trip to the rice fields, touring the coffee plantation, the elephant zoo and the dancing at the palace.
