Dublin is home to more than a quarter of the entire Republic of Ireland’s population and was originally founded as a Viking settlement. We parked the car and left it for 3 nights and walked or used buses / trams. Driving is slow and like many cities confusing for visitors. Dublin is quite expensive (over 30 euros for 4 drinks in a pub, 8+euros for a pint of Guinness) and eating out can add up quickly. Buses and trams a couple of euros per adult ride. The city centre is mostly walkable and some streets are traffic free anyway. Guinness Storehouse is very popular (surprise!) so book online for a timed entry before you go as it makes it easier to enter. We enjoyed it, about 2 hours or so and the included drink doesn't have to be Guinness, but it tastes good there. Book of Kells / Trinity College Library has timed entry tickets also and is also a couple of hours if you read a lot of the museum and Library info stuff. And you can walk around the College grounds. Most sites are within walking distance. It's a relatively young and neutral country, free of the warfare that ravaged Europe, so most of the historic architecture relate to the former colonial power. This has the curious effect of making the struggle for independence sound--in the mouths of the tour guides--like the most exciting thing that ever happened in Dublin. Dublin has turned into such a kip, drug addicts lying on the streets taking drugs, dog mesh on the streets and just a general fearful vibe. You don't feel safe around the place. Everything is crazy dear also, from drinks to food. I'm from the country side so I am not a city lover anyway but Dublin is gone to the dogs. It's way more touristy than I expected.
It's way more touristy than I expected. And this despite many good places for photos. The main draw seems to be the bars on Temple Street and Guiness Brewery. At places the city seems a bit run down or slightly dangerous. I read an article in the local newspaper about that Temple Bar region having muggers. I have never seen so many tourist shops anywhere in the world (sweatshirts, ball caps, frig magnets, etc) . My first visit in more than 20 years - Dublin has changed a lot (esp the demographics and the cost of things!) It's much more international than before, and I had to hunt around for pockets of authenticity. On the other hand, the bridges over the Liffey, the craic, the pubs, the music, the stews and the Guiness are all still there. I grew up with many fond memories of holidays visiting family in and around Dublin. I love the city, the closeness of both beaches and mountains. Dublin is now a real business hub which has made it far more diverse than when I was growing up, however, it maintains its friendly welcoming feel and is very easy to navigate.
