The beach can get crowded in the evenings. The traffic snarl is a let down. The food scene is great especially if you are not a strict vegetarian. It's actually a charming city.
It's actually a charming city. Traffic is a little busier than further south. It has a lot of modern shops and cafes and hotels, while retaining older aspects. There is ample greenery, and the Biopark is quite lovely. It's full of birdlife and has good infrastructure (albeit being left to decay). I didn't visit the beach, but there isn't that much to actually DO in Calicut. It's more a place to be. Things are a little spread out but walking is easy. They at least have footpaths! Kozhikode is very hot city and our hotel was a haven away from the heat and traffic fumes. We use this hotel as a stopover between Wayanad and the backwaters. A good town, great new Mall, and not too frantic. Great Literary Festival in January. We were here for a week but 3-4 days is enough. Alcohol only served in hotels catering for international tourists. Raviz is a good bet. Kozhikkode is really a beautiful city with a rich cultural heritage. You can enjoy a wide variety of food stuffs here. People are really nice to deal with. Auto rickshaw drivers are really good and they will not overcharge for your journey. There are a lot of nice places to visit in Kozhikkode.
