Important Port of Saintly Significance
The Apulian capital Bari has been known for its port since Roman times. Nowadays there are 2 harbours: cruise ships and ferries to Greece and Croatia depart from the new port, while the old port shelters fishing vessels.
Between them is a seafront road bordering the real attraction – the old town. Narrow, cobbled streets lead under arches to hidden piazzas with pavement cafes. Many are on adjoining Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, where the old Roman road is exposed.
The imposing 12th-century Norman-Swabian Castle guards the west of the historic centre, and the simple Cathedral of San Sabino is from the same period. Equally understated is the Basilica of St Nicholas, housing relics of the saint. Pope John Paul II once prayed there, which may have given rise to Bari Airport’s name: Karol Wojtyła Airport.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the meeting point of the old town and the Murat district, built under orders of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Facing each other across this street are the colourful façades of the municipal office and Piccinni Theatre, though most prestigious is the Petruzzelli Theatre opera house.
Booking.com’s Bari accommodation includes luxury hotels by the Fiera del Levante, cheap city centre apartments, and B&Bs near the train station. For families, the slides and swimming pools of Bari Acquapark make a great day out.

The old town was a delight, so long as one was aware of the bicycles, scooters, motorbikes and even cars sharing the narrow streets with you and lots of other pedestrians, in both directions! Due to the weather conditions of the beginnig of October we could not go bathing in the sea but endless walks provide unforgottable memories. Picturesque views everywhere, lovely streets, delicious food, polite service, reasonable prices. Public transport is frequent, cheap and fast. Car rental is also available but I must take a remark on traffic and driving manner in Bari: comparing with Hungary Italian drivers have much more freedom of traffic rules. They are not fined for every little mistakes as we are in Hungary but still they don't kill anyone and drivers are still kind with one . another. Funny to see them just hoot a short warning the others they are coming. In my country they would be fined immediately even for hooting. The location is perfect, the hosts are incredible and the room (we had the suite as we were a family of 4), felt like we were in 5 star accommodation. The breakfast was next level and Marco's Mama makes the best scrambled eggs! The location is perfect - beach was only few minutes away by walking. Shops and buses were also very close. Our homelady was very kind and helpful.
