FAQs about hotels in Bergamo

A Bastion of Old World Charm

The arrival point of low-cost airlines with cheap flights to Milan, beautiful Bergamo is a tourist destination in its own right. In the foothills of the Alps, the city is spread over 2 levels. The main sights are in the upper level, or Città Alta, where sloping, cobbled streets open into pretty squares.

One such square is Piazza Vecchia with its sidewalk cafés, beautiful library and elegant Palazzo della Ragione. Through its arches is the Cappella Colleoni, an impressive chapel with an ornately sculpted façade and even more ornate interior. The nextdoor Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has awe-inspiring frescoes.

Surrounding streets contain several Bergamo old town hotels and B&Bs, while surrounding the whole upper city are 17th-century Venetian walls. There are still remains of the Rocca, the castle that guarded them, and there is also a castle in San Vigilio, a hilltop village reached by a cable car.

A cable car also descends to the modern town, Città Bassa. Nearby is the Accademia Carrara, a fine art gallery, across from the GAMEC modern art museum. The Serie A club Atalanta FC plays in a stadium to the northeast, while southwest is the train station where buses to Orio al Serio Airport depart.

Booking.com has several Bergamo hotels near the airport and the neighboring Orio Center shopping complex.

The Citta Alta is lovely and there are many things to see both there and in the Citta Bassa. The Cathedral, Art Museum and the Piazza Vecchia. We ate at La Ripa - excellent food and service. A bit more expensive but still reasonable for the quality. Bar Flora in the Piaza Vecchia is great for an aperitif.

    The Old City.

The Old City. You need to know that the Bus 1/1A runs from the airport directly to the Old City so if I were to go again, I'd find a hotel/B&B in the Old City, which would be more expensive but worth it.

Very pretty city, but keep in mind that the historic centre is quite a steep uphill walk. The new city centre is very fun to explore as well! Pretty, good local food, lots of history to explore and if you want a lot of shops as well.

Spectacular Citta Alta - interesting buildings, museums and shops. Spectacular views from Venetian walls and Castello San Vigilio. Great restaurants - creative dishes with polenta and local cheeses. Enjoy two funicular railways.

Bergamo is the perfect jewel of a City if you consider ( as I do) Italy as a wonderful box of treasure. Not too big, not to small. It's smart and elegant, but fun too. Don't bother with Milan, too busy, too dusty. Come to see Bergamo, the Upper Town and the 'Modern' (1700's) lower town will keep you enthralled. Great shopping, super food, it's sure to please. My friends at the Bergamo Tourist Office in the high city will be delighted to help you. As for accommodation....check the area carefully before parting with your money! Booking.Com isn't always fair!!!! Look at private listings online, or even ask! But there are plenty of good places and honest people. I think the centre of town is the best place to stay otherwise you are going to be jumping on and off buses. Anyway it's a wonderful place and I'm not saying that because it's my home town!

The true old style Italy in your room.the room was large and spacious the place is full of antiques far nicer than a new plain hotel or b&b with all you need for a stay down to a kettle and a mini fridge.the bathroom was fine a big shower a featurestone wall.heating an air con available too.the premises was just off a cobble stone street. The team contact you with all the details to access the room and are only a phonecall away should you need any assistance. They even arranged an early morning taxi to the airport for us.

Everything!! The location, the hotel, the room, the staff - wow! Danielle was so welcoming and friendly, explaining everything. We had to go during the night, so they prepare us a breakfast box! The rooms are clean and design beautifully. Really, this place is a must when visit Bergamo (especially Citta Alta - the upper and old city).

Location was great, nice area with good shops and restaurants nearby, walking distance to train station and old town (Città alta). Hotel was small with no bar area but very clean and staff very friendly. It was good value for money especially if only staying in Bergamo for a day or two. I would stay there again.

Fantastic location in the old 'citta alta' of Bergamo with its historical alleys. The hotel rooms reflect the history of this old town house and have a lot of character. The staff was super friendly and helpful!

Believe the hype, this is a great little hotel in the centre of the Citta Alta. It was swelteringly hot (in mid June!) and the AC was the best we've encountered in all our travels through Italy.
