We used Empoli as a base as the train station offered many possibilities as a central hub. We did however really enjoy a lovely walk in the scenic hills. The center was clean and had a really nice vibe to it and the locals were very friendly. The apartment was lovely and very comfortable. The surroundings had lovely scenery and the nearby town was vibrant. Public transportation was quite a challenge and getting a taxi was not much easier. A gorgeous authentic Italian town just outside Florence with great train routes to Siena, Lucca, Pisa and Cinque Terre. It's the perfect location if you're planning to have a Tuscan base to explore the area but don't want to pay Florence prices. Do think to “park” your car in the little public parking in front of the hotel (via pulidori), ring the door and then the staff will open the parking door next to the hotel for you to be able to park the car. We were a bit worried about the spring mattress (very soft) but it was comfortable and we slept very well. Everything is a bit oldish but for one night, it was ok.
