Gateway to the 'Cinque Terre'
La Spezia is one of those typical cities of the Liguria Region where colourful houses cover hills and cliffs, providing panoramic views over the sea. Thousands of years of history and a heart open towards the sea have shaped the character of this town surrounded by the 'Cinque Terre'.
Located on the coast of the namesake gulf, its proximity to Genoa has greatly influenced its development and culture. Take a walk uphill from the harbour, and admire the display of architectonic styles in the Old Town. Some of the best hotels in La Spezia are located here, while elegant guesthouses and villas with gulf views can be found in the highest areas.
Must-see sites in the city are the 13th-century Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St George’s Castle. We used La Spezia as a place to visit Cinque Terre region. We were somewhat disappointed in Cinque Terre. It is overcrowded and somewhat dilapidated. The buildings could be refreshed with a coat of paint. The best way to see the region is to take the train to Vernazza, then take a 2-hour boat trip to view the five villages. Actually we visited Cinque Terre so that we didn't have much time to enjoy La Spezia and Porto Venere. You can find mercato, supermarkets, parks, little train for sightseeing and so on. The station was full of tourists. We wanted to ride on a ship but we couldn't because of the bad sea condition(But it's OK for us).Guest review byKordieJapan

And the main street with the shops and excellent restaurants is close by. La Spezia is a nice place that is worth a walk about. The hotel room is large, clean and luxurious. We had a lot of space for our luggage (3 suitcases) and still had a lot of room available. The receptionists were amazing and very helpful, and were also very kind and friendly.
