Gateway to the 'Cinque Terre'
La Spezia is one of those typical cities of the Liguria Region where colourful houses cover hills and cliffs, providing panoramic views over the sea. Thousands of years of history and a heart open towards the sea have shaped the character of this town surrounded by the 'Cinque Terre'.
Located on the coast of the namesake gulf, its proximity to Genoa has greatly influenced its development and culture. Take a walk uphill from the harbour, and admire the display of architectonic styles in the Old Town. Some of the best hotels in La Spezia are located here, while elegant guesthouses and villas with gulf views can be found in the highest areas.
Must-see sites in the city are the 13th-century Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St George’s Castle. Departing from the port of La Spezia, boats can take you to the enchanted ‘Cinque Terre’.

We used La Spezia as a place to visit Cinque Terre region. We were somewhat disappointed in Cinque Terre. It is overcrowded and somewhat dilapidated. The buildings could be refreshed with a coat of paint. The best way to see the region is to take the train to Vernazza, then take a 2-hour boat trip to view the five villages. Actually we visited Cinque Terre so that we didn't have much time to enjoy La Spezia and Porto Venere. You can find mercato, supermarkets, parks, little train for sightseeing and so on. The room was well equipped, and the housekeepers changed the towels regularly. The beds were comfortable, the staff were very friendly, and we also enjoyed breakfast every day. There was a wide variety of choices for breakfast, with options for celiacs as well (something not to be underestimated in Italy!). The hotel itself is perfectly located.
