Rome is a very easy city to navigate either on foot or by public transport. All the main sights are very accessible and easy to book ahead - highly recommended if you want to avoid long queues. It does get very crowded - particularly at the main tourist sites - but go off the main thoroughfares and there are plenty of quietish places with fascinating architecture and history. Highlights? Inevitably the Colosseum (worth going back in the evening to see it lite up) and Forum/Palatine Hill but Castel Sant' Angelo was also special and rather under-sold in the guide books. The Eternal City (Roma) Is the name it has been given rightfully. Definitely need time here to see all the amazing things it has to offer. I'm in the fashion business and have traveled here many times for business. Now that I'm semi-retired I've been able to savor the many cultural , historical , culinary aspects of this beautiful city. I recommend staying at least a week and reading the reviews carefully about what accommodations you'll select. A magical, unique place in the world. But it's soooooo crowded. No place like Rome - it's on the fabulous, European culture icon city mountain-top with Paris and Florence (maybe add Venice and old Athens?) The architecture, the history, the vibe and boy oh boy, the food... But even in September it feels like the most prevalent experience is people management. We loved our time in Rome; the earlier you start, the better. If you are out on the streets as early as possible, you will have the opportunity to truly enjoy the beauty of the Trevi Fountain without being constantly nudged by other tourists. Every church is beautiful. ⚠️ Warning — Always Google every restaurant on Google Maps and check the reviews! AVOID Ristorante Pizzeria Al Piacere. They pretend to offer you food to taste as if it is free of charge, and then they charge you for each individual item on the plate. Before you know it, the bill for two comes to over €300.
