The Very Best of Greece and Rome
A goldmine of Greek and Roman heritage, Siracusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica in hills to the north-west.
Siracusa itself has a necropolis within the amazing Neapolis archaeological park, which also houses Roman amphitheatre and altar remains, as well as one of the largest Greek theatres ever built. Legend has it that the site includes the tomb of Archimedes, who was born here.
The ancient Greeks founded the city (also known as Syracuse) and Cicero even considered it the greatest of all. Columns from that period were used to build the Baroque cathedral, and the Fountain of Arethusa dates to the same era. Both are within Ortygia, a walled peninsula jutting into the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Also here are ruins of the Roman temple of Apollo, and at the tip of the peninsula is the 13th-century Maniace Castle.
The fabulous Siracusa Archaeological Museum houses relics from all these periods, and is located by the Catacombs of Saint John. Opposite them both is the modern conical spire of the Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary church.
Aside from all this history, Siracusa also has plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants, and lovely sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and holiday homes available on Booking.com.

Loved the island of Ortigia, from where you can visit the key attractions of Syracuse. We enjoyed our visit to the Neapolis archeological park with its spectacular ancient Greek theatre, the Roman amphitheatre and ancient stone quarries, with its the ear of Dionysus and impressive acoustics. The park's display of bronze and metal sculptures are an added bonus. A rainy afternoon was spent in the archeological museum. On Ortigia, we liked our visit to the castle, strolling the streets and choosing where to eat from the many fine restaurants. We spent a couple of days doing the above and the other sights and it felt about the right length of time.
