Even in the so-called shoulder season Venice is mobbed with tourists. Our first hours in and near San Marco square were very off-putting. BUT moving beyond San Marco the crowds really thin out. And when the experts say just walk, get lost and discover the Venice of the locals--they know what they're talking about. We always dined in smaller restaurants on small squares or narrow passages; they were busy with locals and tourists but offered quiet and a more personal touch. We found the opulence of the Doge Palace so over the top as to be off-putting. And be forewarned: once you start the tour there's no going back: and it's a long tour.Guest review byJohn - 10.0

Too many sights, tastes and sounds to appreciate in three days, and too many places to visit in such a short time Walking was a pleasure even though the city was busy, added to by the absence of road vehicles. Water taxis & gondolas were a delightful way to see more and travel further. It is a beautiful, intriguing place - the narrow streets, canals & many bridges. Beautiful St Mark's square, basilica and the Doge's palace. Would recommend touring those. The local restaurants are very good, we enjoyed the food and drinks. We travelled 'shoulder season' but the areas around the grand canal were still quite busy, ridiculous number of people on the Rialto bridge. But, like us, everyone came to see those places. Watch out for pickpockets, unfortunately one of our cards was stolen. I just loved Venice.
I just loved Venice. Every turn around the corner, down the small alleyways was a delight.....interesting people, architecture, food, gondolas, stores. allow yourself to get lost but have the google maps app available to guide you back home. Enjoyed St marks Saturday night mass in Italian, the tour of the basilica and the doge, Frari and Scola San Rocco along with lots of gelato. Will return!Guest review byHollyUnited States
