A wonderful city. St. Petersburg in miniature.

A wonderful city. St. Petersburg in miniature. Of course, I understand the historical context, and comparing these cities is unfair :) You can see it all in one day. But strolling around the deserted city at night creates a special atmosphere. There are significant drawbacks: There's nothing for tourists. Although a fee is charged. No interactive signs or maps. No places to charge devices. There's nowhere to hide from the rain, but we might have been lucky. Parks are closed at night, and the only places you can find a place to sit are the few benches and restaurant tables, which aren't cleared at night. Restrooms?! There are plenty of modern solutions these days that don't spoil the view. The city is completely devoid of that.

This is one of the wonders of the world .... but do choose...

This is one of the wonders of the world .... but do choose the right time of the year as summer is much too hot with too many people and then it is frankly unbearable ! Go in the shoulder seasons ( early October was perfect ) when the weather is still fine , and the numbers are slightly more manageable. Oh , and research and reserve ahead .... the key sights ( St Marks / Doges Palace ) again need booking and visiting at the right time of day ( early ) to minimise queues and clearer light, and the best restaurants for quality / value get booked up .....( if you wing it around St Marks square you will get stung !).

The architecture is totally stunning, wherever you look.

The architecture is totally stunning, wherever you look. If you fly in, I recommemnd taking the Alilaguna Boat from the airport (Marco Polo) to Piazza San Marco, but one way only. Take a bus back to the airport, not the boat. It's much quicker

Venice is magical. It is an architectural miracle.

Venice is magical. It is an architectural miracle. Every street and canal is a masterpiece. There is no place like it anywhere. It's expensive but worth it. It's a very safe place and every one there was wonderful. I recommend using water taxis to get around, for example, one can take a water taxi from the airport to your hotel! Moro cafe was nice. Favorite restaurant was al vecio Marangon. Veranda/bar on the canal at the Gritti Palace is very nice. Stayed at The Gritti Palace and Sina Centurion Palace and both were 5-star and exceptional. Gritti more historical, Sina Centurion more modern inside. Gritti is on the busier side of the Grand Canal.

Fantastic place to stay in Venice. Central to everything including the vaporetto. Yes it's a little tucked away but it becomes the best thing about the hotel! Only downsize was that the breakfast is not included but we paid for one morning and it was our worst breakfast in the whole 5 weeks in Italy. But easy to get breakfast somewhere else just to stay here!

I would stay I had best time of my life in Venice mainly because of this hotel. I stayed 5 nights and I was upgraded to Junior suit. The suit was spacious, tastefully decorated and was astonishingly cleaned 2 to 3 times a day without us knowing. The breakfast spread was big with vegan choices and delicious. Location is fabulous bang on Grand canal.
