The island is very attractive.
The island is very attractive. Sadly there is virtually no commercial development. So find a cup of coffee is impossible and even lunch is a struggle. Everyone seem to be with tour groups. This island has a slower pace to the mainland of Okinawa, but has good food and some good beaches. Car rental is a must to explore the island adequately. Around 3 days is more than enough. While the rest of Japan is in winter, this island has great weather, warm enough even to swim in Janaury. The island area near the resort has very few restaurants unless you want to drive 40 minutes into town. (The same holds true for a grocery store, you really have to go into town.) The snorkelling is excellent, so if you just go for that and stay near that area it may be fine. The main city and suburbs is pretty run down. The day trip to a smaller island was worth doing. Would I go there from Australia? We are a bit spoilt in Australia, so I probably wouldn't rush there, but if you're in Japan already it might be worth 3 or 4 days there yes.Guest review byAnonymous - 10

Ishigaki (and Taketomi island - a short ferry ride away) is (are) wonderfully peaceful and quiet. The beaches on Taketomi are beautiful and almost deserted. Getting around (Ishigaki) is by rental car and I cannot recommend Ishigakijimaarun Car Rental more highly (arunco.co). The owner -- who speaks excellent English - could not have been nicer, friendlier and was incredibly generous and helpful. I said my two nights were just right as it served as an introduction to these southern Okinawan Islands. To really retreat and get away from it all you might want to spend longer! Taketomi is tiny and I went there for one day and rented a bicycle.Guest review byAnonymous - 8.0

Ishigaki island is a gorgeous laid back island. The local people were so friendly. It’s a wonderful place to explore the reef and nature of the island. Make sure you have google translate as it an be difficult to work out the menus. We loved the snorkeling trip, saw turtles, sea snakes and Nemo. Bana park is lovely to explore. So much to do here. It gas such a beautiful beach, the Villas are amazing and comfy, the pool area is big and beautiful, the staff was so kind, the many plants and flowers that decorate the entire place is just such an amazing island resort vibe. The breakfast was excellent as well and there are two options - western style and asian style and both are amazing. I am so happy we have taken this hotel! The staff were very friendly and helpful. The manager was excellent and helped with booking our snorkel tours etc. Dinner was a treat every night and we recommend taking this for your stay.
