Very beautiful and quaint little town. Loved the hot foot and hand spas for the public. Views of the lake were amazing and the onsen with the cost of our room was worth it. Lake Toya is a special Jewel of a retreat in Japan. It is well known but many people have never been as its slightly more difficult to get to then other Onsen. The natural beauty of the lake is breathtaking and well worth the visit, it is a small town by comparison so not so much for shopping/nightlife etc. Your going to sit and watch the sunset and soak for a long time in Onsen or tubs. Also many of the Onsen seem to be of very high quality so pick what fits budget/needs best and I bet you will have a spectacular time.Guest review byLeifUnited States - 8.0

Scenic beauty and great views. Opportunity for camping trips, hot baths, water sports, winter sports. Very recommended for outdoor activities at any level of fitness and experience. Lake Toya is a beautiful caldera lake located next to Mt. Usu, an active volcano. Visitors can take a ropeway to the top, or enjoy activities such as paddleboarding, hiking, camping and more in the surrounding area. Toya was so beautiful. The best kind of countryside you can ask for. We went to the toya hill farm which was so good for people watching. Oh but please drive, the public transport was so frustrating. A peaceful spot but very close to the lake, lots of cafes and convenience stores and good Ei Coin laundry. The use of the onsen at Granvillage Toya Daiwa ryokan was a plus. A great base to explore Nisiko ski areas and take the Annupuri gondola and a hike. Noboribetsu and Jigokudani make another good trip too.
