A good area for spotting wildlife, but I would recommend staying in a smaller family-run accommodation as you get a better personal service and excellent local knowledge. Early morning and late afternoon and night boat trips offer great opportunities to see the wildlife. We enjoyed walking round the local village, but there are not many places to eat out. We had all our meals at the homestay.

Amazing time on the river! This is a great place to stay.

Amazing time on the river! This is a great place to stay. Make sure you visit the Saturday/ Sunday market for a glimpse of local life. We would advise joining as many cruises as possible during your stay, to spot as much wildlife as possible. It seems the tours are all the same just the accommodation varies, so don’t worry about being on a budget. We did a 3D2N tour at sakau backpackers (we believe cheapest on the river) and it was absolutely amazing, comfortable rooms, but the important part was the great river cruises and passionate guides who would do all they could to hunt to find as much wildlife as possible. Out of 4 months in Asia, our time in Sakau and Sepilok has been our favourite.
