A fantastic place with so much history- for anyone interested in historic textiles, Leiden was the hub of blanket weaving since medieval times. The Leidse Deken, weavershuis and many other historic places are well within walking distance in Leiden. The De Lakenhal museum is a fantastic historical resource of the textile history in the area. You can rent a small canal boat $90 euro for 2 hrs and such a fantastic way to see the city on an electric powered canal boat you can drive yourself. The parking is great, so is the station, and there is so much to see, with some really historic buildings, great canal views, and excellent shopping. The canals, the friendly people, the variety of things/buildings places to see, all was awesome! Hiring a bike was easy and affordable. The restaurants were easy to book and the food was delicious. A beautiful place to visit, the museums are very good, the University botanical garden fascinating. Lots of places to eat and just have a cup of coffee watching the river boats. It is a way from Leiden Centraal, so we took a taxi to the hotel (about 20 Euros). It is close to the Saturday and Wednesday markets, a good grocery store, and to some nice restaurants on the canals.
