The town definitely deserves the UNESCO status that it has the buildings date back from the 16th century and with the history of the copper mines makes it all more interesting. The town was bustling in the evening with lots of folks out and about, dining and shopping. We were looking for authentic Norwegian food that we did not find. This is one of the few, and an exceptionally lovely example,...
This is one of the few, and an exceptionally lovely example, of an historic town of wooden houses that I have ever seen. Walks in the town are a treat for the eyes, and there are several hotels, restaurants and other businesses in historic buildings as well. I don't recall identifying a single modern building among the several historic area blocks that I explored, There is an unobtrusive, small, modern mall nearby. We went to the main museum which was housed in the former...
We went to the main museum which was housed in the former smelting works. It was very informative and the audio guide was helpful, talking you through in considerable detail the various mining processes. At the time we visited (mid June) there was only one guided tour each day at the mine which is 13 km from Roros and this did not fit with our schedule. Apart from this main museum there was not a lot else to see once you have walked up and down the two main historic streets. We were irritated to have to pay to go into the church . I really enjoyed our stay at the hotel and in the town of Roros. It is unique, never have. I stayed somewhere so historic but was the modern facilities. Definitely recommend this as a must place to visit. There was so much history and the historic buildings. Just wow factor the staff at the hotel also made the stay so memorable.
