Arequipa is the most beautiful city in Peru with buildings...
Arequipa is the most beautiful city in Peru with buildings constructed with white volcanic rock. The food is outstanding with local specialties such as queso helado (ice cream made in a process similar to cheese but doesn't contain cheese), stuffed peppers, shrimp chowder, and fried guinea pig. It's also the perfect place to acclimate to altitude prior to traveling to Puno or Cusco. We flew to Arequipa from Lima, toured the Monastery of Santa Catalina, the Basilica Cathedral, and the Museo Santuario Andinos (Juanita mummy), and then headed to Colca Canyon followed by Puno the next day. The views from Arequipa (AQP) of the snow-capped mountains (volvanoes) is spectacular. The city has a very different feel to Cusco - unlike Cusco, AQP was not an Inca settlement. People are very friendly and the culture and outlook are different to rest of Peru. Our guide joked that people from AQP often consider themselves to be from a different country. Arequipa was a fun place to visit. The sunsets were incredible. It was an easy place to walk around. Don't miss Alpaca Mundo. There's an area of Alpaca World that shows sheared Alpaca fleece, someone weaving the fleece and a history of how the Alpaca clothing, sold to the public, originated in Peru. There's a fantastic shop for all your Alpaca clothing needs. Best of all, about 8 or so Alpacas live there. You can pet and feed them! And it's free!Guest review byTracyUnited States - 10
Loved the vibe!
Loved the vibe! Great city with lots of cultural and archaeological/ historical sites on offer (the nun-s cloister is a must), if you walk around a bit, there is a diversity of perspectives, and it is close to incredible nature reserves. Arequipa is a great option for walking and eating around.beautiful convents and churches. Many delicious spots, hard to choose but my favourite for brunch was Oso and for dinner 13 monjas. Arequipas historical center is very special and safe. the weather is perfect, sunny and a little more chilly at night. The altitude might give you a minor headache but that is about it. It's not as intense as cusco tourism wise, but if you have some days in Peru and want a chill escape Arequipa is the place! also, waaaay cheaper eating in Arequipa than in lima! Beautiful main square and lots of lovely little restaurants tucked away. Great trips from here- Sillah, Los Salinas and Colca Canyon. Second two in particular not to be missed. Fika is great nearby place for small meals, ice cream etc. lovely atmosphere and they provide cards, Uni, jigsaws, drawing materials for you to use. Rooftop is very beautiful, rooms are spacious and well decorated. The staff is very gentle. We were the only guests at the hotel due to protests, road blockades unfortunately. They prepared a special breakfast for us, they booked a 2 days tour to Colca Canyon with a great price (highly recommended) They also stored our luggage for 2 days.
