Katowice is located in the Silesian Highlands and is one of Europe’s largest industrial centres with a commercial, cultural and modern expansion from its old roots.
The spirit of the city is reflected in places such as Cathedral of Christ the King, the multipurpose and flying saucer shaped Spodek arena, the modern Silesia City Centre shopping mall, the cultural Silesian Museum, and the Historical Museum of Katowice.
Silesian Culture and Recreation Park is an extensive park located between Katowice and neighbouring Chorzow, a great place to keep in mind for a day excursion. Chorzow is home to a zoo, a amusement park, a nature reserve and the Silesian Planetarium.
The city offers several dining and entertainment options, from local 'no-frills' eateries and snack bars, to chic restaurants and bars around the cosmopolitan and upmarket streets of Staromiejska and Wawelska.

If not for the event held there, it is not a city we would...
If not for the event held there, it is not a city we would have chosen to visit. We aren't complaining, though. Despite the cold and constant rain we experienced, we feel like we got a true view of an everyday non-tourist town that is clean, safe, and friendly. The transportation system is incredible. Imagine modern buses trains and taxis not only sharing the roads in an organized manner but marveling that such a system was built leaving the cobblestones and buildings of ancient times intact. We love that about the European towns we have visited. It is a little out of the way for US travelers, but we would recommend a visit if you happen to be in the vicinity. We didn’t know what to expect from Katowice as it isn’t...
We didn’t know what to expect from Katowice as it isn’t really known as a touristy destination and is often described as “industrial” but we had a lovely day there - cracking museum ( Silesian museum) which had many different exhibits and we strolled around town and found some lovely places to eat. We booked for a week but stayed a couple of days then moved on to Ostrava then came back to Katowice for a few days . I think a weekend would be long enough unless you are travelling elsewhere. Lots to see. History of Katowice museum. Silesia museum. Catholic cathedral. Streets wide and clean. Easy to walk around the city centre. Lovely wide square, RYNEK with pedestrian only zone and cafes. For those who enjoy retail therapy there is also the excellent Galeria Katowice centre. They didn't advised but at the main door they wrote a letter that all reservations were moved to Novotel Katowice Centrum (4 star hotel) right across the street (10 metres away). I am super happy with their option they offered us and also they kept our breakfast reservation, although breakfast at the 4 star hotel was more expensive.
