I recommend travelling outside the main holiday periods, as Porto has been discovered by many world tourists! Take the train from the wonderful Sao Bento station along the Douro river. The most scenic part is the final hour between Pinhao and Pocinho which is stunning. Boat trips along the river with views of the six bridges and the ancient boats that carried the wine barrels are very enjoyable, and a visit to the amazing central market is a must! Walk round with a glass of wine and choose items to take to a table to enjoy. Children would also love a return trip on the cable car, which is close to the wine caves. Most of the interesting parts of Porto can be accessed by walking and I would recommend this method, we have found many little gems by walking from one location to another. The city itself is nice. One of the hypocrisies of being a tourist is that you don't like a lot of other tourists. And Porto is flooded with tourists. And we were there in the shoulder season (October). Crowds of people everywhere, long lines to get into things, prices higher than expected. Probably the most crowded city with tourists that I have ever seen, and I travel a lot. Also, the city is very noisy. A lot of heavy traffic and cars honking their horns, ambulances wailing, etc. Also a lot of construction going on, so jack hammers, etc. All in all, I had high expectations for Porto, and it fell short due to what I have described above.Guest review byAnonymousUnited States - 10

Lovely place for a short break. Might be a bit too "up and down" for some people. Beware the steps :). Plenty to see & do in Porto & within easy reach. Good mix of culture, art, architecture, food, shopping, history, a beach, some great views, a bit of everything.
