Beautiful, tropical-feeling island 20 nautical miles off the coast of the PRC mainland, this is a chapter in history kept alive with its abundant military fortresses, tunnels, inspiring patriotic slogans everywhere, and continued military presence. If you want to understand the Chinese Civil War and how it's impacted the ROC, come here (or to Kinmen.) Must visit for a real understanding of how modern Taiwan and ROC came to be. Also plenty of trails, sandy beaches, and animal encounters scattered throughout the islands known as Matsu. Most surprising were the lovely little bistros and bars and great restaurant gems tucked away in its villages!Guest review byJarinTaiwan
