Situated half an hour from the coast in the old town or Tortora, this is a little hidden gem. Fabulous friendly hosts. Incredible breakfast which included home baked local goods and very reasonably priced evening meal (5 courses) featuring local cuisine. I wasn’t looking for this place . It was a stopover on my way through to Rome from the South. I will definitely be back. Excellent value for money Photos taken from top of the village at dusk of a misty winter evening. The family/owners of the property came to pick me up at the station and gave me a lift to some attractions too. I was lucky to have the upper floor for myself in the first couple of nights . I stayed in Tramonto room which had everything I needed including an electric kettle. I moved into the Mare room when I decided to extend my stay for another couple of nights to explore San Nicola Arcella and visit Grotta di Acomagno to do a stone balance sculpture before closing time . Praia a Mare has a relaxing vibe in September. The locals are friendly and the train station is more functional than other Calabrian tourist destinations I've been to. I highly recommend Il Giardino Delle Rose for independent travellers who don't mind walking a lot but there's always a bike or a car to hire if needed be.
