The hotel was in an exceptional location. Within walking distance of essentially all of the main sights. The staff were so lovely, friendly and helpful. Breakfast catered for our tastes, a huge selection to choose from. The room was wonderfully clean and comfortable. We arrived extremely early in the morning and a member of staff was there waiting for us to show us our room. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Acropolis

Long before it became known as Bloomfield Falls, this magnificent waterfall was called Wujal Wujal by the indigenous Kuku Yalanji people. Hire a guide and learn why these people still consider Wujal Wujal to be sacred. Or just head down with your 4x4 and a picnic hamper, and have lunch in serious style!

Go before sunset to the 6-7.30pm time slot and watch the sun go down. September is the perfect month. Wear non slip shoes. You can buy e-tickets at the bottom. If you travel on the train, take the Acropolis station. Shorter walk from there. Take water with you. Take lots of photos. This attraction is one of our world’s wonders not to be missed!! There is also a small ceremony taking the flag down before closing time.

Very expensive for something that takes 5 mins to look around. Beautiful ancient building but a bit disappointed by the lack of the usual museum things: expositions, artefacts, hey even some shelter from the sun would be great.

The view of the Acropolis is truly spectacular, and having such a large hotel right in downtown Athens is quite unique. The service at the reception was impeccable – the three ladies who assisted me could not have been more friendly, attentive, and forthcoming.

The hosts were extremely accommodating and responsive to our requests, especially with arriving into Athens early and departing late. They allowed us to store our large bags before and after check-in/out. Great to have AC and a surprisingly spacious and modern apartment. Breakfast included was delicious! Within 20min walking distance to everything we needed - bus, train to Port, train to airport, acropolis, Plaka, supermarkets, takeout. Recommend to all!

Ilissos Hotel was a great base for our stay in Athens. The location is very convenient (just about 10 minutes from the Sygrou-Fix metro station) making it easy to reach both the Acropolis and the airport. Our room was clean and comfortable, and we especially enjoyed having a terrace with views of the Acropolis. Breakfast was continental, with several options to choose from, and it was a good start to the day. Overall, a practical and pleasant stay in Athens.

It's an outstanding location for visiting Syntagma Square, Plaka, Monistiraki and the Acropolis area. Tastefully refurbished, well equipped and very comfortable. We booked the 1st floor apartment, which was well sized and has Juliet balconies overlooking the quiet street of Afroditis (which links on to Adriannou - one of the oldest commercial streets in Athens which runs from the Acropolis through Plaka to Monistiraki). Vasili, the owner, was very attentive, and provided lots of useful information without being too intrusive.

2bedroom apartment was spacious and a good size for Athens. It did have a couple of broken items like the toilet seat when we arrived. Key things to be aware of it is up a flight of stairs with no lift so you have to be 'able' to get bags up winding stairs. It is above a bakery and down from the acropolis and restaurants. Totally safe to walk at night and a good location. Breakfast was across the road at the actual hotel. It was small continental and good.

Go beyond the Acropolis and explore the Agora and Kerameikos, imagining yourself entering Athens along the road from the port of Piraeus, and following the Panathenaic Way to the Akropolis. Stop at the museums along the way to understand the significance of each site. Then visit the National Archaeological Museum to see that classical Athens is just one of Greece's many magnificent cultures.

If you want to avoid crowds while seeing the famous sights, start out early and be at the sights when they open. I arrived at the Acropolis around 8:10 AM and there were only around 20 people on the whole compound. It was wonderful! There was a crowd climbing the hill when I descended, though!

  • Consider visiting Athens in May or September.

Consider visiting Athens in May or September. May is just lovely. Spring flowers like poppies and daisies cover the hills. It's not too busy and not too hot. Remember that on holidays you are always moving so consider the weather when you make your plans. Also, research opening hours as the Acropolis is closed May 1; and other Ancient Landmarks are closed on certain days and on certain hours any other day.
