Brussels is a contrast from the rest of the Europe.
Brussels is a contrast from the rest of the Europe. While it does have the architecture that other European cities have, it has the unclean roads, over smoking and dirty streets to boast about which other European cities do not have. This is worsened by their anti-tourost policy by not including signage in English or announcements in English. That worsens the experience. Liked the walking tour of Bruges (excellent brochure available from the Tourist Information Centre) and the Visit Bruges app. Enjoyed a cruise on a canal boat, which provides a perspective on the town not available when walking. Loved the many grand old buildings. Ghent is one of the most attractive northern European cities boasting magnificent and extensive 16th and 17th century architecture and its cathedral is home to some major artwork of historic importance. There is a wide range of restaurants and bars. We arrived on a Sunday and the taxi dropped us out of town as traffic is restricted on a Sunday jeez indded! It took 30 minutes to trundle our suitcases to the hotel. So, after that initial mishap and feeling like we were in the Truman Show, we thawed and thoroughly enjoyed our 3 days in the city. Lovely people, restaurants and bars. Our stay was disappointing due to poor cleanliness, inadequate amenities, and understaffing, with malfunctioning air conditioning and privacy breaches. Its inconvenient location led to frequent transportation issues, and unhelpful staff showed little concern despite complaints. Zaventem is close to the airport - our main reason for choosing this town. It is an easy journey by train into Brussels central which I would recommend because traffic and parking is difficult. Blankenberge is for my family a special vacation destination. We like it due to the convenient transport, the train stops in the center of the city. The city is not big and has its charm, by walking it is possible to reach each attraction. The tram allows you to go to the other cities and towns located along the Belgian coast. Good choice of restaurants with some posh chocolate shops and good beers. Quite a good range of chain stores and niche smaller shops. Really like its compactness and easy train ride from Brussels. Visit Hasselt tourist centre is about 50m from our hotel Het Menneke. Hasselt Greeters offer free personal introduction to Hasselt. The Japanese Garden, the largest in Europe, is well worth a visit. Best restaurant we found was de Orangerie, sited in a long atrium. Nice menu includes Flemish favourites. Attentive staff.
