Auray is a pretty little town and it has a wonderful market...
Auray is a pretty little town and it has a wonderful market on Mondays. One of the best French markets we have been to. There is plenty to explore in the Morbihan (we used the trains a lot as well as our car) We recommend two sights in particular: 1. the megalith stones at Carnac 2. I just wanted a location close to Vannes for easy access to restaurants for evening meals with internet access and free parking right outside as I was carrying many heavy tools and equipment. Le Bono is a lovely small village with all the facilities you need. There are a number of restaurants as well as a two boulangeries. Crossing over the river using the iconic bridge leads you to some pleasant walks through the trees. I loved the port of Trinite Sur Mer with its countless boats in the harbour. The town has amazing excellent restaurants all along the foreshore and it is a delight to just sit in the sun and watch all the activity on the waterfront. Modern, airy, open floor plan & well equipped. Nice views in all directions. Comfortable bed, good WiFi & television. Good laundry facilities. However, no bathroom privacy-the toilet & shower room are partitioned from the rest of the space only by a curtain. The apartment was very hot & stuffy at night even with a small window open. The large windows were locked shut & the portable AC unit was not helpful. Entering & leaving required using 3 different digital locks each with a different passcode. We loved Vannes.
We loved Vannes. The old town is so interesting with its medieval buildings and hidden streets and squares. It is so close to the port with its waterside activities. We visited the Cathedral and the Musee de Beaux Arts, Despite ongoing renovations at the Cathedral we still found lots to look at. The ramparts and gardens are also well worth a look. There were plenty of places to eat. The day we visited the old town it poured with rain so we had wonderful moules frites opposite the cathedral. I have to admit that I didn't see a great deal of Auray...
I have to admit that I didn't see a great deal of Auray itself and focused on the Port area.I was fascinated to learn that I was standing on the quayside where Benjamin Franklin landed after the American Revolution in 1776 and there are references to this in various places around the St Goustan Port.The steep and narrow streets may not be ideal territory for those with limited mobility but they are incredibly scenic and worth the effort.On the other side of the coin,the restaurants around the port certainly use the quality of the location to boost their prices a bit. Beautiful town close to so many great attractions, perfect spot for people looking for peace and quiet without beeing to far away from bigger cities.
