Poitiers was our chosen night stop as we drove North toward St Malo. We were there just for the night and left fairly soon after breakfast. We did manage to walk around the main town area after checking in that evening and it was full of interesting architecture. A nice little town with a small grassed area on front of cafes and bars giving it a spacious feel. Many restaurants to choose from as well as local amenity shops. Cinema in the centre. Parking along the roadside free in many places. Pleasant to walk around the many small winding streets. Train station in town too. Angoulême is a beautiful city with the cartoon murals all around. But I didn't know that some places were on top of the hill, like the cathedral, some museums were all down by the mountain. I kind of struggled walking all around because of the heat stroke ( it was 40 degrees). But city buses can save you and take you anywhere you want. Rochefort is a very nice town by any standards.
Rochefort is a very nice town by any standards. It has lots of history in that it was where the French made their eary war ships and there is a dedicated museum to this, The town is laid out on a grid system so its easy to navigate. Huge street market once a week, plus an indoor market place. There are lots of other museums and you should get on line to see all the attractions that are available. Perfect location when travelling from Calais to Spain, easy access from motorway. Very friendly helpful staff, perfect for our dogs, great to find an hotel that both our dogs were allowed to stay in the same room.
