Very nice boutique hotel, extremely well situated in Catania, with minimalist yet stylish (and spacious) room. The hotel staff were very friendly. The restaurant - both for dinner and breakfast - is a must! The dinner was delicious and the wine amazing. The breakfast was equally wonderful with a lot of tasty and local products. I would definitely recommend this place for any stay in Catania and hope to be back.

FAQs about hotels in Sicily

An Island of Intrigue

The largest Italian island, Sicily has long been a place of mystery and intrigue, coveted by civilisations. Its Greek history is most evident at Agrigento whose UNESCO World Heritage-listed Valley of the Temples has amazingly well-preserved Greek temples.

Also important to Greece was Siracusa. Archimedes was born here and there is a theatre and necropolis to explore. However, the most spectacularly located Greek theatre is at Taormina. Set on a hill overlooking the glorious Mediterranean Sea, this theatre points towards Mount Etna smoking away in the distance above Catania. Picturesque Taormina is one of the most popular Sicily resorts and down below there are some wonderful Giardini Naxos hotels on the beach, available on Booking.com.

Another resort boasting some of the best Sicily hotels for families is fabulous Cefalù. Home to a lovely beach, this small town is dramatically located at the foot of a mountain. To the north-west are the Aeolian Islands (also known as the Lipari Islands), volcanic islands with plunging cliffs and secret coves.

Back on the main island, the capital Palermo is a seductive mix of amazing architecture and laidback life. Trapani to the west is known for its salt flats, whereas Messina to the east is where trains drive straight onto the ferry to Reggio Calabria on the Italian mainland.

Palermo is a big city for Sicily.

Palermo is a big city for Sicily. It has great local markets and incredible sights, but we spent 6 nights in Sicily (which was arguably too short), three of which were in Catania and three were in Palermo. For our family, it would have been nice to find a place in a small seaside town near the water and to do a couple day trips into the city, but would have been nice to have beach time. While City was beautiful, there was a lot of graffiti and a certain grunge that was disappointing in both Catania and Palermo. We did go to Siracusa and Taurmina each of which might have been nicer bases to stay on the east side of the Island.

We did a walking food tour our first evening and it was really great way to see the center of the city, and find out more about the foods. We stayed for three nights but felt like we could have spent another evening, as we did a day trip to Siracusa and a day trip to Mt Etna/Tourmina so we didn't have enough time in Catania to appreciate it. That being said, many of the streets had graffiti on the walls as well as garbage on the sides of the streets, so it was not a clean city.

My rating is for the island of ortigia in Siracusa.

My rating is for the island of ortigia in Siracusa. I visited one night and one afternoon, stayed at a hotel 10 min drive from Ortigia that had free parking since we had a car which was good because we did a day trip to Noto and Modica. Oritigia was absolutely beautiful, surrounded by water, beautiful buildings and architecture, great shops and restaurants and they had nice fountains, old ruins and the castle. A MUST SEE when you are in Sicily.

Trapani was a bit of a disappointment.

Trapani was a bit of a disappointment. Especially if you're trying to compare it to Noto, Ragusa, and Modica, for example. That comparison isn't really possible/shouldn't be made. If you're coming from Agrigento, continue on to Castellammare del Golfo. And on the way there, be sure to visit Erice. It's truly beautiful little place on a mountain. And the views are stunning, too.

Beautiful town, full of life at night.

Beautiful town, full of life at night. Easily walkable, flat streets. Beach is nice and long, with multiple free areas. It's a gorgeous scene with the huge mountains, and lighthouse at the other end. It is definitely more of a touristy feel, as we went in August. Definitely explore up and down the peninsula, as there's excellent beaches and coves to swim at as well!
