FAQs about hotels in Umbria
Hilltop Towns Ringing with Music
One of Italy’s smallest regions, fabulous Umbria has stunning hilltop towns, rolling vineyards and magnificent architecture to rival its more famous neighbour Tuscany.
The capital Perugia is a university town whose cobbled centre houses medieval art, steep streets and shops selling locally made chocolate. It also hosts a jazz festival, while the annual Festival of the Two Worlds is in Spoleto, a town with a hilltop castle and well-preserved Roman theatre.
Remains of a Roman theatre are also in walled Gubbio, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval towns. North-east, Città di Castello has excellent galleries and a church visible for miles around. The same is true of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dedicated to the saint who lived in poverty. Ironically, this hillside town has one of the few 5-star Umbria hotels.
Foligno has a peaceful river and further south Terni is near the multi-level Marmore waterfalls. Orvieto on a sheer escarpment to the north-west houses the jewel in the Umbrian crown – a fantastic cathedral with a gold-mosaic façade.
To the north, jutting into Lake Trasimeno on a piece of land that was once an island, is Castiglione del Lago. In the east, tranquil Norcia in the foothills of the Monti Sibillini National Park houses some of the many Umbria hotels in the countryside on Booking.com.

- From US$229.97 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 1,022 reviewsThe property and rooms were stunning! We were welcomed by the owner when we arrived who gave us a full background about the hotel. The views, the restoration of the church and all the rooms were gorgeous. We had a free room upgrade to their best room which was so lovely. We ate at the restaurant the evening we stayed and we’re floored by the quality and taste of the tasting menu and wine. After dinner the owner drove us in the golf buggy up to the spa where we had an hour in the jacuzzi under the stars before the owner came to pick us up an hour later at midnight. Would highly recommend staying here!Guest review byFrancescaUnited Kingdom
- From US$634.35 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.3Superb - What previous guests thought, 417 reviewsThe rooms were fairly small but clean, cozy, and extremely comfortable. The spa facilities were excellent, especially the heated indoor-outdoor pool, though the massages were quite average compared to other spa resorts we've visited. The food and wine selection at the resort were outstanding, and the views across the property were truly impressive. I would definitely return if I ever visit that area of Italy again. Also remember to call the resort before booking as some rooms are far from the property and some are inside the property.Guest review byDilsher SinghIndia
- From US$167.79 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 7.8Good - What previous guests thought, 919 reviewsLocation is perfect. Facilities clean and beautiful. The staff were lovely. When we arrived we discovered we had no electricity (no aircon) in our room. They kindly offered us a new room which ended up as an upgrade. This was so greatly appreciated as we had just finished our first day driving on the opposite side and our hire car overheating, we were exhausted. We stayed 6 nights, breakfast was delicious, Pool was clean with amazing views and room was comfortable.Guest review byJodiAustralia
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 1,109 reviewsthe beautiful garden with the statues, the temple and the library, but also the climb up the hill of Assisi, the monks walking around, introduce you to the world of Saint Francis. It's not exactly the poverty he lived and taught, but his spirit is still there. With the birds and the wolves.Guest review byndrosGreece

It is a very clean and well maintained city. Walking up and down hills is part of the city . We walked up the steep road to the castle. But €15 each to enter is a bit expensive. Two nights was enough to see all walking .Guest review byKelvinNew Zealand - 10.0

Perugia is a somewhat hidden gem and not always included in the international travellers' itinerary. This is a mistake. It has much to offer and there are very few international tourists crowding out the place, unlike so many other Italian small cities and towns. It is also very good value for money and has some very interesting and unusual features. The restaurants are very good and represent better value for money than other places in Italy. If you are traveling in Umria/Tuscany then it is well worth including in your itinerary.Guest review byKennethAustralia - 10.0

The quintessential Italian village -- so much history with beautiful cobblestone streets, amazing cafes and quaint shops. We were there for a family baptism and every venue accommodated our large groups with advance planning. Completely gracious and wonderful -- I will definitely return. It's a hidden gem.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0
Terni is a wonderful city.
Terni is a wonderful city. In my opinion it's a hidden gem of Italy. It's an easy 1-hour train ride from Rome, and on the way to all the northern Italian cities. Terni Centro has almost no cars, so incredibly walking friendly, full of cafes, gelaterias, and pizza. All, with picture book old Italian architecture. Also, Terni really comes alive after 4pm!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0
Small and not overrun with lots of foreign tourists.
Small and not overrun with lots of foreign tourists. Station very convenient so easy to use as a base to visit Asissi, Spoleto and Perugia, yet plenty to see in Spello. A delightful little hill town. Hard walking up hill but downhill all the way home if accommodation was at the bottom end of the walled city.Guest review byBethAustralia - 10.0
We stayed one night.
We stayed one night. Julia, the hostess, was outstandingly helpful and she spoke very good English. The dinner and breakfast were particularly good. We ate dinner outdoors but in good shade from the evening sun. There is a large swimming pool which has a superb view. I highly recommend Romitorio agriturismo.Guest review byPaulUnited Kingdom - 10.0
