Clean, comfortable and well designed. Outstanding breakfast and super nice staff - either the local competition is very tough or simply the owners understand the value of customer satisfaction and promote it with their staff. Not economical but in line with the area and period of the year. Great covered parking with properly sized spots. Convention with a nearby ‘lido’ for beach stay, good value for the area. Last but not least, extra appreciation goes to Aurora for her great sense of humor and excellent cocktails 🍹 👍🏻

Versilia Highlights

Villa Puccini

Giacomo Puccini’s world renowned opera compositions live on in this museum. Outside, rare water birds glide over Lake Massaciuccoli.

Carnival of Viareggio

This seaside city hosts one of Italy’s most celebrated carnival festivals, where masked characters and Papier-mâché floats wind along the promenade.

Pietrasanta

Nearby marble quarries have attracted sculptors and architects for centuries. Their work is displayed throughout the city and Museo dei Bozzetti.

Forte dei Marmi

Luxury boutiques and sensational beach discotheques are a big crowd-pleaser, while charming seaside promenades offer a calming reprieve.

Lido di Camaiore Beach

Fine white sands set before a dramatic backdrop of the Apuan Alps inspire relaxation, while the calm sea is perfect for a swim.

Marina di Pietrasanta

Pinewood forests slip down the Apuan Alps until the landscape gives way to Marina di Pietrasanta’s sandy beaches.

Church of San Pantaleone a Elici in Massarosa

This medieval church’s bell tower rises over the surrounding village. Plain limestone walls conceal an adorned apse and marble triptych.

Hiking and mountain biking near Corsanico

Hiking and biking trails carve down the forested hillsides of this town, making it the perfect spot to embark on an outdoor adventure.

Cecina

Flaky and savoury, this freshly baked flatbread is a local favourite made from chickpea flour and is sold in most bakeries.

A very attractive town.

A very attractive town. The beaches are superb, but unless you head out of town you need to go into a beach club. There are no free access beaches in town. Some hotels have an arrangement with a beach club for free or discounted access for guests, so it is worth checking this if you intend to use the beaches. It can cost typically EUR30-40 for 2 chairs, a sunbed and an umbrella. They don't offer reduced rates until 3-4pm. That will add up after a few days. The restaurants are OK but nothing special. Most of them serve the same food, which can get boring. We ate in our hotel restaurant more than we usually would, but the quality and variety of food on offer was better than any outside restaurant we tried. Apart from the beach, shops and walking up and down the promenade, there is not much to actually do in Viarregio, so you may want to get out on some day trips. Pisa and Luca are accessible by train, although we found them both to be disappointing (especially Luca - what a dump!). We found the train service a bit hit and miss, although it is cheap. Consider hiring a car if you plan to get out of Viareggio. If you pick up and drop off at the airport, it will also be useful for airport transfers.

Everything was a bit run-down and in need of restoration.

Everything was a bit run-down and in need of restoration. The beaches and restaurants were almost entirely empty of people, so there was a a lack of excitement and "buzz" about the whole area. I might have expected this a month later, but not in September.

Beautiful little town nestled in between the mountains and sea. The locals are very friendly, it's an easy town to walk around as it's not too big. The beach is HUGE so you can have a lovely walk along it. Lots of places to eat and drink to suit a variety of budgets – highlights were Caffe Soldi, Caffe Roma, Pesce Baracca, Bocconcino. There are lots of places to visit nearby – Pietrasanta, Lucca, Pisa, Cinequeterra – or you can relax on the beach in Forte, you will not be bored!

Torre del Lago Puccini is truly a unique and special place, full of atmosphere and charm. It is here that one of the greatest opera composers, Giacomo Puccini, lived and created his masterpieces. Today, you can visit the museum in his former villa, where he composed his operas – an unforgettable experience that we highly recommend to all lovers of art and music. The town itself enchants with its beauty – located by a picturesque lake, with a beautifully designed open-air theatre dedicated to opera. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the people are kind and friendly, and everywhere you go you can feel the authentic Italian spirit. On top of that, the food is absolutely delicious – especially the pizza, which is a must-try.We have already had the pleasure of attending two breathtaking opera performances here, and we are already planning our third visit. Torre del Lago Puccini is a place that draws you back again and again – we sincerely recommend it to everyone who loves opera, Italian hospitality, and the beauty of this country.

A small village, 4k population with few stores & amenities, but it is quiet and peaceful. It is a 5 minute drive from Viareggio proper, so placement wise, it is perfect for those wanting a large place to stay, away from noise, yet easy to access if desired. I used it as a base as I traveled around the west coast of Italy (Lucca, Florence, Pisa, Siena, Rome, etc.).

Viarreggio is a very friendly and family type of town with some great beaches, pleasant pedestrianised streets, restaurants and a lovely park in the centre.
