- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.5Exceptional - What previous guests thought, 87 reviewsStunning ryokan with beautiful onsen. The kaiseki meal was spectacular although as we were a family group, they served us in a dining hall of sorts, which had bright lighting and little atmosphere. Definitely would have been nicer to dine in our beautiful rooms. A beautiful ryokan all round. We reserved the private family onsen as our kids were laggy about bathing with strangers, and it worked perfectly.Guest review byJaneAustralia
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.5Very good - What previous guests thought, 310 reviewsThe food was excellent with very impressive presentations. We had half-board and the latest breakfast serving was at 8:30, the latest dinner at 18:30. Not much happening in the evening, although the onsens were great. It felt like a spa-resort more than a bustling hotel, but we enjoyed it. We had a traditional room with futons and a lovely sea-view. It was simple but comfortable and clean.Guest review bySella AarrestadNorway
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.1Very good - What previous guests thought, 105 reviewsIt’s clean, very well equipped with heater, cooking utensils. The owners are so nice and friendly. Language may be a barrier but they tried really hard to accommodate all our needs. The place is slightly secluded which is perfect for quiet vacation but you can still go to town centre by just taking 1 train to Karuizawa station and the owners are nice enough to drop and pick you!Guest review byShereenMalaysia
- From US$581.29 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.3Superb - What previous guests thought, 38 reviewsExcellent stay, and the view of the bay from the room was amazing. Both meals were delicious, and we had them in a private room. Also, there were a few private baths. The service staff were amiable and helpful. It is worth a trip to this remote area of the Noto Peninsula.Guest review byManamiJapan

Nagoya is a really nice city, very easy to get around and much less crowded than the other big cities. There are a number of things to do such as, visit the huge planetarium, the Tokugawa gardens, the Noritake museum to see the beautiful ceramics. There are also Ghibli Park and Legoland for families and the castle is lovely. From Nagoya there is easy access to many other places such as Takeyama and Shirakawago.Guest review bymarkAustralia - 10.0

Really liked downshifting from Tokyo and spending 2 nights in Kanazawa--a third might have even been right. The gardens, architecture, restaurants. Would definitely recommend to anyone who asked where to stop during a Japan vacation.Guest review bySNDUnited States - 10.0

We were able to take great pictures of Mt Fuji from our window. The onsen and buffet was great. The price was affordable for a group of 8 with free breakfast and dinner. The room was clean and Yukata was included. Highly recommendedGuest review byMiyoUnited States - 10.0

Takayama is beautiful, geared towards local and foreign tourists. The only catch is that some places will only take catch so you need to keep that in mind. We found beautiful crafts close to the temple, we also visited the local morning markets and caught the bus to Shirakawa-Go which I cannot reccomend enough.Guest review byHelenaMalta - 8.0

We really liked Matsumoto and it was a much more fun and interesting city than we expected. We had an overnight stay, largely to visit the famous castle, after visiting Kiso valley. Would happily have stayed longer.Guest review byrebeccaCanada - 8.0

I've been extremely lucky, I was in Niigata after a snowstorm and I found an amazing scenery of beaches under a white carpet. The fisherman market is an experience you should not miss, delicious food and crazy cheap bill. Try to drive the coastline!Guest review byMastershifuChina - 10.0
Shizuoka is a hidden gem.
Shizuoka is a hidden gem. You can stay here and get to many sightseeing destinations by rail (day trips) and come back to the relaxation of more laidback location. Locals are very pleasant and friendly, not so jaded by the over tourism of Kyoto and Osaka. We speak very limited Japanese, but were welcomed and managed in small local restaurants and Izakayas.Guest review byMarkAustralia - 10.0

I went to Nagano to do historical research at three separate facilities about an hours drive from central Nagano City. -- My main objective was visiting the Underground Imperial Headquarters 松代大本営地下壕 (松代象山地下壕) at Matsushiro. The tunnel system is impressive, and the museum next to it adds a lot of background. -- I visited the Hijiri Aviation Museum 聖博物館 in Omi, which displays items and posters full of info about its past as a stop for those on the way to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, as well as having a few combat aircraft and a main gun from the Japanese Battleship Mutsu. In an out-of-the-way place. -- I also went to the Mugonkan 戦没画学生慰霊美術館 無言館 in Ueda City. A very somber place since it introduces Japanese artists (showing a couple of their paintings) who died during the war years. Also in a rather remote location. It's unfortunate that all three have signs and displays that are almost exclusively in Japanese. Non-Japanese speakers who are interested in World War II history and happen to be near Nagano may still get something out of a self-tour of the tunnel system in Matsushiro, which is interesting to see in person (and cool in summer). The Wikipedia entry for it seems accurate, much more than you can find on site in English. Be aware that cameras are allowed at Hijiri, but cannot be used in the Mugonkan and in the Matsushiro museum (the tunnels are okay). I don't recommend taking kids to any of these sites.Guest review byTheodoreJapan - 10.0
People there are very helpful and courteous.
People there are very helpful and courteous. It is very clean, and uncongested. Quiet and peaceful, unlike the other cities. I highkt recommend pairing Toyama and Tetayama, i.e. 3 and 2 nights respectively . Simply amazing.Guest review byWangSingapore - 8.0
Quiet seaside town with no tourists apart from us.
Quiet seaside town with no tourists apart from us. Easy to get to from Osaka. Stayed in a traditional ryokan (tattoo friendly). Spent the day walking along the harbour to the ropeway up to Atami castle which had several different art displays and museums including an adults only one and a great view of the coast. Away from the beach things were pretty steep so a car might have been a sensible optionGuest review byBrigidAustralia
