The entire stay was a pampering experience. The view from the room was amazing. Both dinner and breakfast were exquisitely prepared and served in private rooms. We had a 50 min private bath which was extremely soothing. There were small zen gardens, libraries in a corner, and cupboards full of yukatas of different colors and designs. Kanazawa is an easygoing, relaxed city where a lot of the attractions are easily walkable from one another, and lots of great places to eat as well. It's a welcome break from the rush and bustle of Tokyo, but still very cosmopolitan. Easy to see the historical areas by yourself or take tours for deeper information. We enjoyed the castle, Kenroku-en Gardens, the samurai district, all 3 geiko districts, Omicho Market, a day out to Shirakawa-go and also time in the 21st Century Art Museum. It's easy to get around on the local buses, and easy to get to and from by train. Great eateries for us included The Godburger, Izakaya Ken, Shirom Creperie.Guest review bySJAustralia - 8.0

Takayama has a mix of quaint old architecture and modern smalltown buildings. It is less crowded than Kyoto and great for exploring on foot. Takayama is also a great base for making day trips to places like the Shirakawa-go Unesco heritage site, Kamikochi nature park and Shinhotaka Ropeway. Shizuoka is a hidden gem.
Shizuoka is a hidden gem. You can stay here and get to many sightseeing destinations by rail (day trips) and come back to the relaxation of more laidback location. Locals are very pleasant and friendly, not so jaded by the over tourism of Kyoto and Osaka. Quiet seaside town with no tourists apart from us. Easy to get to from Osaka. Stayed in a traditional ryokan (tattoo friendly). Spent the day walking along the harbour to the ropeway up to Atami castle which had several different art displays and museums including an adults only one and a great view of the coast.
