FAQs about hotels in Penang
A Palm-Lined Pearl
An island and part of the mainland make up the small Malaysian region of Penang, also known as the ‘pearl of the Orient’. It has long been coveted and the capital Georgetown has many elegant Colonial buildings. The observation deck of the KOMTAR tower – the tallest building – offers spectacular views of the town and surrounding mountains.
A funicular railway goes up to Penang Hill deep in the forest. Nearby Air Itam has one of Asia’s largest Buddhist temples - Kek Lok Si – lit by hundreds of lights at night. Another fantastic temple is Taoist Kong Hock Keong in Georgetown.
Penang Airport is near southern Bayan Lepas, and across the Malacca Strait is Pulau Jerejak, a peaceful island where trees merge into ocean.
In the much livelier north, Batu Feringghi is the largest resort, with lots of Penang hotels on the beach, plenty of bars and a night market. East, green mountains slope down to blue waters at Tanjung Bungah, where several high-rise hotels overlook the palm-lined beach towards the Floating Mosque just offshore.
On the mainland Butterworth is the departure point for ferries to Penang island, and has a bird park housing a large number of Malaysian species. Wherever you decide to stay, Booking.com has a fantastic range of Penang hotels and apartments to choose from.

- From US$200.47 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.5Very good - What previous guests thought, 1,315 reviewsThe staff are spectacular! The moment we arrived on site with our luggage, a staff member approached and asked if we are checking in and he took care of loading our luggage while giving us directions to the reception on the 3rd floor. While we were checking in, we got complimentary icecream and our bags were brought to our room shortly after we went inside the room. Beds were king sized and comfortable, linen was clean, and the pillows were awesome! AC worked well and there us a mini fridge with complimentary drinks and some small snacks (wafer cookie and chocolate covered nuts) Black out curtains ensured we could sleep through the night (maybe set an alarm if you wanted to get up early otherwise you'll think it's still the middle of the night when it's 10am!) Breakfast buffet was a great value and some dishes and drinks changed daily. You can get nasi lemak, fried noodles, salad, assortment of pastries and bread, icecream, soup noodles, steamed buns and sticky rice, congee, and there is a coffee machine too (i didnt use it but it looked popular!) Housekeeping comes by daily and if you're in the room they will check if you'd like anything changed or the room cleaned, very friendly and kind staff. The driveway in front of the hotel lobby is managed by a security guard all day long. He works hard to direct traffic and keep things moving , especially since people are hailing cars and constantly getting picked up or dropped off. He took time to help us load up bags into our car when we were leaving and that was greatly appreciated. A minor thing was our room had some bug husks near the ceiling on one wall and it looks like the bugs are all gone, just had these old shells left behind. The front desk staff immediately got housekeeping to clear it when we mentioned it, and they also offered to change the room for us too! We stayed in the same room in the end because there was no issue with the room especially after it was all cleaned up.Guest review byCosetteCanada
- From US$131.81 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 125 reviews+ peace and quiet … super tranquil + superb views from the hilltops + great local food prepared for us + the most thoughtful staff + WiFi is v good + the pool … not heated but not required ! We had the whole hilltop to ourselves as we were there early to mid week. Points to consider: If you’re used to snacking you’ll need to buy these in advance and take them with you as food is limited to breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu is typically what staff can obtain locally. Staff leave the hilltop resort at around 8-9 pm which for us, meant we had the whole resort to ourselves which was magical but could be eerie for the more feint hearted. Take plenty of mozzie spray ( I’m a walking Kebab for the average mosquito) and have still come away with a dozen bites! Make sure you have a confident taxi driver as the road up and switchbacks put our cabbie off and we had to call up for the staff to come down and get us.Guest review byCarlUnited Kingdom

The beach chairs are comfortable and the massage service excellent. The room is clean, large and the bedding is excellent. I spent my best nights of my entire road trip in Malaysia (16 nights). The breakfast is well stocked with good products. The staff are friendly and very kind. A 5* for the reception staff, who gave me a very warm welcome. A very very good hotel where I enjoyed staying, I would return without hesitation.Guest review byGianfrancoSwitzerland

The staff were really polite, kind and understanding. For those who loves beautiful scenery, art, history building, come explore Georgetown, so many pictures you can take here. I eat at roti bakar hutton lane. You can use rapid van less than 10 mins you can arrive there. Walkable distance to jetty, ferry. I went to bukit bendera, the cool air make us comfortable.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Batu Ferringhi, is a great place for a relaxing holiday in the warm. The food in Penang is the big drawcard. It is great for chilling out and leaving the stress behind. The Night Markets are also great. Best of all is Long Beach Cafe, which is a market place which opens in the evening and has the best food, cheap as chips. Great restaurants everywhere. Dont forget to go to Ferringhi Walk and Bora Bora for Dinner. Food, Glorious Food.Guest review byStephenAustralia - 8.0

I stayed one night in Bukit Mertajam and overall, it was a decent short stop. The town has a quiet, local charm and isn’t too busy, which made it quite relaxing. There’s not a whole lot to do, but it’s a good place if you just want to unwind or try some local food—there are definitely some hidden gems when it comes to hawker stalls and small eateries. That said, it’s not really a tourist-heavy spot, so don’t expect major attractions or much nightlife. It’s more of a laid-back, pass-through kind of town. For one night, it was okay and served its purpose as a quick rest point.Guest review byKitsonLMalaysia - 6.0
What I liked:
What I liked: The hotel was clean, the staff were friendly, and the location was convenient for getting around. What wasn’t the best: We stayed in a triple room, and the bathroom only had a single sliding door, which offered very little privacy. This setup felt unsuitable for multiple guests and made the stay a bit uncomfortable.Guest review byPunithevathiMalaysia - 8.0

Perai is an Underrated Land to Explore which is a another Option Place to Stay to avoid Massive Traffic in Penang Island. Hotels, Food, Fast Access to Exit the highway and the Shopping Malls are within 5-8mins drive. Lift service was poor and shared with Cleaner and laundry team. Delayed the whole process of the lift service which takes 20 to 30 minutes each wait. Noisy and the wall too thin. Can hear every movement of the children jumping and their walks running screaming crying till late nights from neighbours. Toilets are dirty and too small. No closet and plates.Guest review byAzuraMalaysia - 10.0

Nice place. Comfortable. No big city rush, but many new shops & eateries. Good food, quite cheap. Friendly people. Got lots to explore, including the parks. Also not too far from Penang & Kedah, just nicely in between.Guest review bySherinaMalaysia - 6.0

I like it because it is away from the traffic of Georgetown on the one side and from touristic Batu Ferringhi on the other. A handful of decent restaurants supplement the many informal local huts, giving all levels of cost and quality for variable dining. All the local folk are courteous and kindly, though English is universally poor to incomprehensible. Excellent modern buses connect with Georgetown etc. on a frequent, low-cost service. Car hire is not expensive and a liberating device for island discovery. Pop-up Fruit stalls abound for an exotic breakfast in your hotel room or on the beach. Meridien Hotel has the cleanest beach!Guest review byVictorUnited Kingdom - 2.0
recently stayed at this Airbnb, and unfortunately, the...
recently stayed at this Airbnb, and unfortunately, the experience was not great. The house is located very close to a mosque, and the loud prayers start at 6 AM daily, which is disruptive if you’re planning to sleep in. The house is also much smaller than expected for a double-storey unit. The living room is cramped and not ideal for hosting friends. All the rooms are small, and the kitchen is equally compact, so don’t expect much space here. A major inconvenience is the smart key system, which turns off the electricity when you leave the house. This means you can’t leave any devices charging or keep the air conditioning running while you’re out for lunch or dinner. Plus, there’s no air conditioning in the living room, which makes the space uncomfortable during hot days. Communication was another issue. The owner does not understand English and only speaks Malay, which made communication uncomfortable for me. On top of that, there is a CCTV camera outside the car porch, and the owner won’t allow you to turn off the modem, so it feels like you’re being constantly monitored. I found this quite unsettling. Lastly, the water pressure in the toilet is low, which was an additional disappointment. Overall, this stay was not as expected, and there are better options available for the price.Guest review byandythewangMalaysia
