- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.0Superb - What previous guests thought, 663 reviewsMel the owner is a wonderful lady. She helped us out with all the details in the surroundings. Great and comfort room with plenty of heating systems (even in bathroom) for a very cold night. We have spent 2 nights and everything was reachable in a 10 minute walk. We will definitely stay there again.Guest review byDanielaRomania

Breakfast was surprisingly wonderful with good variety of food and drinks. Room itself was very clean and comfortable with nice fluffy towels. Location was quite central yet not noisy.Guest review byChan YoungSingapore

October. We stayed at Te Anau 2 nights.
October. We stayed at Te Anau 2 nights. It's a great little town ,very pretty with tulips and rhododendrons flowering. Middle day we drove to Milford Sound and back . This definitely is a 2hr drive each way . Would be more in busy times due to traffic or if very wet. If you don't travel to Fjordlands region you are missing a lot! After checkout we then drove to Manapouri 15 mins away-this is the departure point- as we had an overnight stay booked on The Navigator in Doubtful Sound - Definitely recommend this.Guest review byAnne-MareeAustralia - 8.0

Tranquil town away from the touristy hubbub of Te Anau but within range to catch the tour to Milford Sound. The Church restaurant served excellent meals at a reasonable price. Probably best suited to tours to Doubtful Sounds, but we did not mind the 20 minute drive to Te Anau.Guest review byLesCanada - 10

There are a few activities and places to visit. Excellent for photography. Getting to and out of Milford Sound can be challenging because of the weather and road condition which can be quite unpredictable.Guest review byBoonAustralia - 10

A very pretty little town on Lake Te Anau, with the snow covered mountains of Fiorland National Park as the back drop. Plenty of eateries many right on the lake. Supermarkets and specialty shops. Beautiful walks. Hiking trails if you're looking for that. Jaw droppingly beautiful scenery everywhere. A 2 hour drive to Milford Sound or take a bus tour. Tours from Queenstown stop off in Te Anau to collect passengers & drop back on return trip. This was what we did and it was so much easier than travelling all the way from Queenstown. Te Anau is a nice and worthwhile drive from Invercargill. We just loved Te Anau. It was all and more that I'd hoped for!Guest review byLee-AnneAustralia - 10

Manapouri is a breathtakingly beautiful area with a quiet restful atmosphere. There is a lovely restaurant nearby and other food outlets. Lots to do in the area too. There are the day and overnight trips to Doubtful Sound, a stunningly beautiful area that will blow your mind. You do need to book ahead for these trips. There is also glow worm caves, alpaca farms, Kaykaking, tramping and more. Do your research and enjoy an amazing time in Manapouri.Guest review byLornaNew Zealand - 8.0

We drove our hire car from Queenstown and stayed just the one night as we had a Tour booked the next day on the boat. We enjoyed the drive and the stunning scenery on our trip to Milford Sound; however, if you are short on time, you can FLY straight out and do the Boat cruise in half a day. If you drive down- it's an ALL-DAY event and that is why we opted to stay overnight and travel back to Queenstown the next day. There is only a CAFE in the town for quick food and coffee etc... There were limited places to pull up on the trip to have a meal. Lots of scenery and a long drive but enjoyable if you like car trips?Guest review byKARENAustralia - 10

Te Anau is a beautiful town, set on the shores of a lake, with close access to Milford and Doubtful Sounds. The main shopping centre offers lots of different restaurants and take away options. There is also a big supermarket for supplies. There is a lovely gift shop in Te Anau, as well.9Guest review byNarelle PattersonAustralia - 6.0

Manapouri is a very small, lakefront town that has a beautiful view of Lake Manapouri and the mountains beyond. It also has a fantastic cafe/bar/restaurant called The Church, which I thoroughly recommend. However, don't stay at the Manapouri Lakeview Motor Inn if you can avoid it.Guest review byMeredithAustralia - 10

Staying in the Sound is special - it is a very short drive (minutes) to the cruise departure points. It's about 2 hours drive otherwise from the closest town to the national park. You are immersed in the environment and you need to be flexible in regards to weather - we had several road closures (can't leave the park), rain and significant snow fall at the Homer tunnel area. The Lodge did a good job of communicating the various conditions.Guest review byKirstyAustralia
