Set just 30 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Tendo Hotel provides accommodation in Tendo with access to an open-air bath, free bikes, as well as a 24-hour front desk. Each accommodation at the 3-star ryokan has mountain views, and guests can enjoy access to a hot spring bath and a public bath. The ryokan also offers free WiFi, free private parking and facilities for disabled guests. The breakfast spread was good and we enjoyed our 4 mornings of good breakfast. It is Japanese style mixed with some western, there are juices, tea, coffee and desserts. The staff serving breakfast was very polite and neat. What we like best is the private room Japanese dinner which we enjoyed for the 3 nights. Very exclusive and different night, different menu. On our last night our dinner was changed from 2nd floor to the 10 floor which allow us to see the night scene of this little town. I highly recommend this for family or honey moon couple. We booked 3 rooms and requested for our rooms to be next to one another and the hotel helped us with this request. The Onsen in this Ryoken was clean and comfortable both indoor and outdoor. Walking from Tendo station to here is about 15 mins. The room is super comfortable, clean, shower and WC separated, well furnished in Japanese style. If I have a chance, will return.

Boasting garden views, Yamagata The Takinami offers accommodation with balcony, around 32 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. There is an in-house restaurant, plus free private parking and free WiFi are available. Guests also enjoy access to the hot spring bath and beauty services, as well as the public bath and open-air bath. The real magic of Yamagata The Takinami reveals itself at dinnertime. Unlike any other ryokan experience we've had, this one offers a chef’s table-style dinner, where guests from all rooms gather around a central counter in the dining room. At the centre, a team of chefs and service staff work with calm precision, wielding sharp knives, tending to steaming pots, and plating each dish with grace and artistry.

This ryokan features free private parking and a 24-hour front desk. The accommodation offers a hot spring bath, hot tub, traditional restaurant and free WiFi. This place is beautiful in every way. The staff were incredibly helpful and nice. The room was spacious, clean and had the most incredible view of the surrounding snowcapped mountains. Location was great. And the private bathhouse was a plus for someone shy like me.

Yamagata Zao Pension Aplon Stage is a 3-star property set in Kaminoyama. It offers free WiFi, ski-to-door access, a garden and a restaurant. Boasting family rooms, this property also provides guests with a sun terrace. This is a great pension run by a lovely family. The husband picked us up at the bus station and drove us to the pension and also took us to the slopes in the morning. They gave us a coupon for renting gear and a map explaining the different onsen options around town. Their English is pretty limited, but they are happy to use Google translate. Also, it was not a big deal, but I think it is important for foreign guests to be aware that ski culture in Japan sort of assumes you are eating dinner at your accommodation. We did not know this and did not book dinner at the hotel. Most restaurants in town were fully booked with reservations (although there is a convenience store with good takeaway food), so try to book dinner at the hotel or make a dinner reservation somewhere well in advance. We were very luck and managed to make a reservation at the Mongolian lamb place Kasheru for the second night and that was amazing. But we saw restaurants turning people away repeatedly because everywhere in town was full. Also, the family will not pick you up by car any later that 6:45 pm (perfectly reasonable) and the public ski shuttles don't run on weekdays, so you need to pre-book a taxi if dinner will end later than that (which it probably will since most restaurants open at 6 pm). And there are not a lot of taxis and no Uber. I wish I had realized all of this up front, but that was our own ignorance and our stay was great regardless. Again, this is just the local ski culture and not the hotel's fault. It's just helpful information for future guests.
